What do you mean "where did it go" if they're allowed to spend whatever amount of money they want?

On the vending machine. I know, I was there.

Nah, this is actually a really good question....I can't figure it out (yet).

They each, initially, spent $10. The BB then gave them each a dollar back, which meant they only spent $9 each. ($27) If it's not a trick question, and the BB only took $2, then there is another dollar floating around in limbo somewhere.

Is it a trick question, or is there a logical answer for it?

If it is, the dollar could have been spent on anything, which would make trying to guess kinda pointless.

If you figure it out ,don't say right away!!!

Clearly there isn't a missing dollar. In this case, we have to realize that once the manager decided to pay the men a refund of 5 dollars, the number 30 no longer had any meaning. The hotel was getting 25 dollars. So, the correct equation is written as 9 times 3 men is 27, minus the 2 "employee delivery fee" is 25.

Ohhh, I didn't understand the question the first time around. I thought he was saying that after all of that happened, the dudes went and arbitrarily spent some money with their credit cards or something.

Thats what I was thinking, so that dollar isn't "missing" right? It's just "not there". I guess the $30 part tricked me.

So I'm guessing the answer is in that the BB never told them exactly how much the room was. He just said they overpaid and gave them each a dollar back, keeping the two, basically charging them $27 for a $25 dollar room. I get it now. If he would have actually told them that the room was $25, he would not have been able to pocket the $2 without their noticing.

There's the problem. The bell-boy took two of the 27 bucks. It's really

2(busboy) + 3(refund) + 25(clerk) = 30

...not

27(busboy+clerk) + 2(busboy AGAIN) = 29(with 'missing' dollar)

although you can work backwards and all your money is there.

As explained above, it's quite simple.

The room is $25.
The busboy took 2.
They each got 1 (3 in all) back.
Now, the host has $25, the visitors have $3 and the busboy has $2.

I remember this question, it's an old one. The problem is the wording, it's not correct.
