What is it with America's habit of SUING???

My parents burned some stuff in our backyard which created some smoke, and then one of our neighbors felt sick from it. She refused to go to the hospital though, maybe because she was better immediately or because she's dumb, I don't know. My parents went over and helped her out and then gave the family some gifts as an apology, and everyone was really nice to one another and chatted like sensible people. But now my parents are really worried that they still might sue! And I wouldn't put it past them, either.

Seriously. WHY do Americans sue ALL THE GODDAMN TIME? Even when it seems like it's resolved between people... they still sue if they think they can gain from it. WHY, WHY, WHY?? Stupid country. My parents are Russian, they're really nice people, and this kind of behavior just boggles their mind. It makes me sick to see them worried about this. They don't deserve this crap.

I wouldn't be worried, honestly, as it seems you weren't an ass to them. The idea that americans sue all the time is like the whole, 'Americans are all fat' thing. It happens, and yeah, the media glorifies it, but most of the time sensible people reslove it among themselves.

As far as suing- capitalistic economy. People need money and suing can get them some.

If it is legal where they live to burn what they burned in the back yard and that's all they did, the neighbor does not have a case. To lose a civil suit, you have to have breached a duty. Also, the plaintiff has to prove damages. If the neighbor felt sick for a few minutes and that's all, she will not be able to prove any substantial damages. It looks to me like the neighbor will not be able to find a lawyer to represent her and that if she does, your parents can win summary judgment, which is a quick way for the defense to get a stupid case out of court and get reimbursed for court costs. That is how it looks from where I am sitting, but if there is some kind of back yard burning ordinance or something and the neighbor claims a bunch of wild stuff about being sick for weeks and having medical bills, there could be an issue. I really doubt there is a problem.

Wait wait wait I got one for you guys. (and girls! jeese get off my back already...) (Alsop this is a an article out of a bathroom reader, not a quote cause I can't find the %!@$##$ article!)Ok so this celebertie lady wins some blah blah blah contest and wins this rv thing(you know, drive-able with all those bed and 'fridge things) anyway, she takes it and uses it. She's driving on the highway and she needs to take a "visit to the lavatory" so what does she do about the fact that she's driving? She puts it on cruise control. ... Yeah..... No one was hurt but she sues the people who made the rv saying that it didn't say in the manual that she couldn't do that.... Worst part is she won..... Got 100k$ and a new rv.

Why do people sue? because people value money more then human beings.

Like good old bob marley once said

"Life is worth MUCH more then Gold"

People have that quote backwards in this country.
I would rather die on my feet then to live on my knees.

The top ten most absurd lawsuits:

      http://www.legalzoom.com/legal-artic...icle11331.html

      This is my favorite one...

In 1995, Robert Lee Brock, a Virginia prison inmate, decided to take a new approach to the legal system. After filing a number of unsuccessful lawsuits against the prison system, Brock sued himself. He claimed his civil rights and religious beliefs were violated when he allowed himself to get drunk. After all, it was inebriation that created his cycle of committing crimes and being incarcerated. He demanded $5 million from himself. However, since he didn’t earn an income behind bars, he felt the state should pay. Needless to say, the case was thrown out.

Lol, that's awesome, reminds me of the inmate who sued the prison he was in because he injured himself trying to bust out.

Well Mes, There have been stupider law suits. I read in a book one time that some guy sued
God himself for making his life suck. He didn't sue for money, but for his dog and ex-wife to come back to him. The worst part is THIS FUCKER WON! The dip shit judge said God didn't show so the man won. That shit just blew me away when I read it.

That judge's decision was totally harmless, though. He was ridiculing the suit by saying, "Okay, God owes you your dog and wife back. Now what?" As precedent, other judges would just say, "In accordance with the case of ? v. God, you are entitled to a dog and wife to be given to you by God."

LOL!! Reminds me of the fairly recent case in India, where a court was angry at Vishnu (or whoever) for not showing up when summoned in years.

By the way, looks like nothing came of that little scare, so that's good. The stuff they were burning was illegal though, even though it was just branches and pine cones ( christ). A couple of cops stopped by, and all they did was hand us a sheet that described these rules in detail.
