The mere fact that I would be discriminated against, looked down upon, and perhaps pitied for the rest of my life is one cross that I cannot bear. Besides, you all take death to be such a bad thing. I'd rather shoot for the unknown than the known.

Choosing death over that doesn't sound all that shocking to me. I mean, even a non-human animal is likely to slowly wither away and die if its physical appearance is severely damaged. People get depressed over a lot of really stupid shit and then go and commit suicide over it. At least this is something that no one would blame you for being suicidally depressed about.
