      Help with Everyman Schedule

      Hi,
I am looking to adopt an everyman sleep schedule, but I need some advice on how I can fit it into my schedule. I have a large block (8 hours) where I am unable to nap. I was thinking of doing a 4-hour core nap 2:30a - 6:30a, and 2 smaller naps throughout the day. But from 7a - 3p I am unable to nap what so ever. Any advice?

There's an interesting article by PureDoxyk which I found helpful for figuring out scheduling. Here's the URL: http://everything2.com/title/Everyman+Sleep+Schedule

She mentions a possible schedule (with 3 hour core), and two of the naps have 8 hours between them, so it might be possible to go that long without a nap and not have a problem (I'm not sure though). She also mentions that the longer the core sleep, generally the more flexibility with the nap times there is. Maybe try to keep your core sleep and naps as evenly spaced around that block of awake time as possible. And if that schedule doesn't work out, you might also consider biphasic (basically, having less than the amount of sleep at night than when on monophasic, but supplented with a siesta nap).

I ultimately decided to go with the following:

      Core nap(3:30a-6:30a)
      Supplement nap(3:00p-3:30p)
      Supplement nap(9:00p-9:30p)

I am on day 5 of my venture into the realm of polyphasic sleeping, and I find it difficult to fall asleep during my naps. Falling asleep during the core nap is just fine, but I have only slept during 1 or 2 of my supplement naps. Is this uncommon?

I'm just finishing my first day on Everyman, so all I know so far is that like you said, it isn't hard to fall asleep for core sleep. I do remember from my previous attempt at polyphasic that I had a hard time falling asleep for naps for the first couple days, but I was on a naps-only schedule, so I probably started having an easier time with naps a lot sooner than with Everyman.

Apparently, Everyman takes longer (about a month) before you're adjusted enough to stop using the alarm, whereas a schedule like Uberman takes more like a couple weeks. This has to do with being less sleep deprived with Everyman, so you body doesn't have that sense of urgency to adapt. So I wouldn't be surprised if it takes longer for the naps to start being restful.

      >Nautilus and comwiz : it is exactely what you say , getting asleep (napping) i found is the most difficult thing when trying to sleep polyphasic .

In fact I think a better substitute for "polyphasic" would be "learning how to nap".

You would think that when you are so tired and sleep-deprived you could sleep at any given moment but sometimes (many times in the beginning) you just can't . And when you skip naps it will definetly make your chance of over-sleeping a lot higher the next time when you finally could fall asleep . (this is why I failed for two attempts) and your structure in sleep is gone Napping is a skill , something you have to learn.

I am in my third attempt now for Uberman (5 days) and after again not beeing able to sleep and the following mess-up I am trying something different since two days : easing in to it very lazy , not the hard way.
6 times 45 minutes of listening to a lengthened Placebo soundtrack . Even when i can't fall asleep i feel quite rested often and my body seems to get more and more tired at the right time now. Also I am fully functional (still ) and no zombie. But I can do it because I don't have to work at the moment.

Let you know how that goes if you are interested.....

Yep, naps are a learned skill. I failed my first attempt at polyphasic mainly, I think, because I was adding extra naps. It had pretty much the same effect though; get really tired, take extra nap, not be able to fall asleep a couple naps later. Repeat.

I'd definitely be interested in hearing about the adjustment. If you do find a way to adjust without the sleep deprivation, that'd be great. Maybe it wouldn't scare so many people away from trying polyphasic sleep if they didn't have to worry about the possibility of hallucinations
