Thread: My laptop is freaking slow.

So, I have a laptop. It's used. I'm running Kaspersky as my virus protection (it has found 30 viruses/trojans/etc). From the last user, there is still McAfee installed, and I have no clue how to uninstall it (I don't have the disc, and some of its components are missing).

Well, my computer is lagging like shit. I've typed a paragraph already, and it is taking a whole minute for the thing to show up. It's on and off, but recently it has become more 'on' than 'off.' My computer also starts up slowly, has trouble running scripts, and says it is low on virtual memory. I don't know anything about fixing this crap. But it is too annoying to ignore. Please help.

The slow startup is likely caused by massive amounts of crap on the machine being loaded. Almost every single application, for instance Adobe Reader, will tell the machine to load something at startup.

There's probably a lot of conflict with Macafee from Kaspersky (and both take up plenty of RAM), not to mention that there's also likely to be plenty of spyware, trojans, and more viruses taking up the memory.

Really, the only thing to do to a PC in this state is completely wipe it and reinstall your OS (Windows XP presumably?) from scratch.

Aw man. There's programs that I don't own the disc to on here. I don't want to delete 'em (though, I'll be buying my own this fall). DX

If the programs are legally owned then you can always download them again using bittorrent. I agree with Photo, wipe out the whole thing and start from scratch.

You might also consider backing up all your porn and deleting all but the raunchiest stuff, so that you have more HD space. Then, do a full defrag. That tends to make things a lot faster, since all the crap it's loading at startup won't be segmented all over the place.

Also, definitely get rid of as much stuff from the startup list as you can.

Windows sucks! It's like a damn virus really. The longer windows is running on your pc, the slower your pc works. I think windows does this intentionally in order for people to buy new pc's, and when they do buy new pc's, they are usually forced to buy a new windows which is automaticly included. It's this deal they got going with the hardware industry.

The only solution is a clean re-install.

Your computer can be the fastest computer on the market, after sufficient amount of time, windows will manage to make it slower than a pentium 1.

You'd think for the richest company on earth they would be able to make a better program... it's like the main task of windows is to slow your pc down. Think about it, it doesn't do anything else really.
