      Okay, besides upgrading, does anyone have a possible solution? Not that I don't appreciate you guys' help, but I just want to know if this is a virus or something else.

      clear the cache, cookies and history, then upgrade.

      You could install another browser and use that one, like Opera or Firefox. Then it wouldn't interfere with your parent's browsing experience. Just make sure you don't make it the default browser, they might object to that.
