      What are these hallucinations?

They only occur when I'm going to sleep the first time. I can't force them to occur, though often I think I'm getting close. I'll just be lying down, eyes closed, mind usually wandering. Suddenly I'll realize that I can see some sort of image projected in front of me. It's basically like I'm seeing through my eyelids. Usually I just see an image of my room from the way I'm facing, but I've also seen ivy and fingers. Then I open my eyes and I just see my room like it is.

I don't think it's HI, because it's before I fall asleep at all, but could it be? I'm always very aware when I see the images and I can make conscious decisions, which in the moment are usually to freak out and open my eyes because I don't want to see weird or scary things. I've never seen them before successful WILD and DEILD attempts, so what could they possibly be?

I'm pretty sure that's just HI. Sometimes they can be just specs or blurs and sometimes they're vivid images that show up. I get them a lot if I'm trying to notice and usually I can influence them a bit by thinking what I want them to be so I usually don't worry about frightening images. Sometimes I experience what you're saying how you can see through your eyelids, usually I just try to play around with it and look around, but if I focus too much on it it fades or changes to something else. I've always thought of these as HI, but if there's another name for it I'd like to know too.

From what I've read HI can happen any time your eyes are closed and it's kinda dark, you just have to notice it. When you're drifting off to sleep they become more vivid but usually you don't notice them because your mind is going unconscious. I think because you're becoming aware you notice them during this vivid stage before sleep. Sometimes I see them when I'm trying to WILD and I try to create vivid pictures with them for the dream, but usually I can never hold on to it long enough. Never had a successful WILD, but from what I've read you don't have to see these images to be able to WILD.

Do you (or does anyone) know if I can WILD off of these illusions?

Yes, you can. Though you will find more success after having some deep sleep, wake up after 4 hours or so.

One of the first steps in learning to WILD is noticing these little dreamlets, hallucinations, and other HI. It is normal for them to happen every time you fall asleep. You probably can't WILD from them when you first go to sleep at night. You don't dream that early in the night. As Blackfox said, try this same thing after 4 or 5 hours of sleep, when you are close to a long dream. If you can manage to stay aware while you watch these hallucinations, they will lead you into a lucid dream.

You can also pay attention to these images when you meditate or nap during the day. Depending on your timing, you may go directly into a dream during an afternoon or mid-morning nap.
