If you are in sleep paralysis you won't be able to move your thumb. But if you try hard enough to move it you will break SP and then be able to move it.

You do risk breaking SP if you force a body part to move. It is not good to focus on any one part of your body too much. If you are good with basic relaxation and meditative skills you can learn to move in a mental state that prevents SP from breaking. You are in full SP, but with a very soft and relaxed will you gently make the needed gesture. A good example is scratching your face, swallowing, or turning on your side. All of those can be done with out breaking SP, if and only if, you keep the intent and will very gentle. Then the motion itself should be non jerky and relaxed.
