*NREM, not SP. SP is something that happens when you wake up from a dream and you're literally paralyzed. NREM is really what you're referring to.
Now that we got that straight, sorry to break it to ya, but you weren't in NREM. NREM is unmistakable: loud noises, crazy visual hallucinations, and sometimes feelings of motion, heaviness, or lightness. Heavy breathing is not part of it. In fact, you shouldn't even be aware of your breathing at all.
Interestingly enough, heavy breathing, rapid heartbeat, and feelings of excitation are associated with people who trick themselves into thinking they're in NREM but they're really just psyching themselves out.
