Techniques make me try too hard

I'm quite inexperienced, so maybe I just need to try a little longer. But whenever I try to do some very defined technique, I feel like I concentrate too hard and don't let my mind simply relax. The one time I have felt SP is when I wasn't using a technique at all and was just telling myself 'let it happen'. Does anyone else take a 'non-technique technique'? Would you guys suggest that I keep trying techniques? Any input would help.

When I first started LDing, I always used techniques as guide lines. I never really followed them step by step in the exact way they were described. You can always try just following the general idea of the technique and add your own alterations that fit you best. If you are worried about following a technique precisely or if you are too focused on the technique, it will make it pretty hard to achieve success. Stay calm, relax, and as long as you have the general idea and general formula for LD success, you can achieve it any way you wish. Remember, everyone is different and many techniques work for many different people. You may just need to find one that works well for you. Good Luck to you!

Well, I always suggest that someone's first lucid dream should be a DILD. But if you're stuck on WILDs, here is some advice:

Remember, WILD is an umbrella term, there are several methods to work best for certain people. As a WILD, it is easy to screw yourself up by thinking too much about it. Focusing too much. DEILDs gave me a feel for WILDs, without doing a classic WILD. Of course, my life (and probably physiology) was better suited for DEILDs at the time.

VILDs can keep you a little more distracted, but still focused. It might work better for your situation.

Experiment, that'll be the best way to figure it out.
      Bollocks.

I've had a few lucid dreams before, just not intentionally.
Also, I'm not a very good visualizer. Not sure if that makes VILD a less attractive option.

VILD = Visualization ILD. Sounds like a good choice for you~
