The right wing wants to oppress kids. |

I really want to discuss this. Why are cuss words such a big deal? I mean they are just words, why does it matter if I say "shit" or I say "poop"? They both have the same definition, what made these words bad? Why aren't we allowed to say these words in school, who is it hurting? I can't see this as anything other than another malfunction in human logic? Discuss. |

because the people that like using swear words love the fact that it has such a naughty connotation. It's win-win. Don't mess up a good thing. |
Dreamsickle, why should it be considered naughty? They are just words, society just amazes me sometimes. I bet no one would be able to come with an argument to as why they are bad... |
Society has defined swear words to be very insulting, so when someone uses one, it's assumed that the person is trying to be rude, and people take offence to that. That is the only justification I can find for why swearing might be bad in some cases. But I think people who believe that the only possible use of swearing is to be rude and vulgar, and believe that people who swear must be uneducated, are wrong. |

Dianeva I agree with that 100 percent. The rules of society amaze me sometimes... |

Historically, it's peasant vernacular, and it exists in most cultures across the globe. The lower classes genuinely prefer more crude language and descriptions, while the upper classes prefer to describe things in a more extravagant and eloquent manner (or a 'holier' manner). |
What bet? EDIT: Oh, I am so stupid. No you don't. That just explains why people think they are bad. I meant, why shouldn't we use them? Why are they really bad? Who are they hurting? |

Hmmmm... I kind of have mixed views on it. I get the logic of what you're saying, but at the same time it's been ingrained in me that "swearing is BAD!". Doesn't mean I don't do it though...Hehe |
In that case, I'd agree. I don't like when I hear someone (usually teenagers) who swear every second sentence. I dislike it, not because I'm offended at their swearing, but for the same reason I might be irritated when people use the word 'like' every few words, or a lot of cliche phrases. Because in these cases, I think the person's vocabulary, and by extension the growth of their mind and ability to think clearly, is likely being stunted. It just hurts to listen to them. |
Nice try dreamsicle, but I never mentioned rude insults. I was talking about swearing. Too answer your irrelevant question though, I honestly wouldn't care... |
If the words have the same meaning, why don't you just use the word "poop," instead? |

A guy in my chem class done this. Peed in a bin because the teacher didn't let him go to the toilet. The class went nuts. He kinda disappeared after that... I guess the school kicked him out, although my school doesn't usually tend to do that. Maybe he got put on a part-time timetable. Meh. I'm kinda glad he had his back to me |

Oneironaut I don't agree with you. Saying fuck is not anything like whipping out your dick and showing everyone. Also, I don't have a problem saying poop. I wasn't bitching ( sorry, complaining oops ) about what word I could say. I was just thought the whole swearing thing was stupid and would make an interesting discussion. I do, however like your argument. They could be meant to have a vulgar meaning, in some cases. However, what is the difference between damn and darn. If you think about it, shouldn't darn be curse word? No, because society sees a difference. For some reason it is appropriate for me to say darn but not damn. Come on, if you think about it, it is so stupid. |

Words are only words. I don't agree with people saying that they are inappropriate because people have labeled them as obscene and insulting. If you are angry and want to insult somebody, you can either call them a cunt or a jerk, but your feelings of anger may be the same. Words are subjective based on the person using them. If you can know this, you shouldn't be more insulted more by somebody using a curse word than a more socially appropriate word. On the other hand, I suppose that a majority of people tend to use swear words more when they are angry. I do not, so this may be where my views are coming from. I swear evenly throughout most of my speaking with those I am comfortable enough to swear around. |
They are cuss words because we don't want 5 year olds running around saying, "Fuck you asshole!" |
Why do people say "cuss", is the word curse that bad? |
To me, swearing feels a lot more satisfying while expressing anger or even just expressing a strong opinion about something because society views it as bad. It gives me a bit of a feeling like I'm breaking societal rules and am not falling for their bs belief that swearing is bad. This might sound a bit immature, but after considering it, I think this might be the case for many people. |

OP: because words have meanings. That's why they're words. |
