Sleep Paralysis connected to Lucid Dreaming??

So, ever since I was about 12, I started waking up at around dead time, 3:00 AM. Every night and I was Paralyzed. I couldn't move any part of my body or talk, all I could do was move my eyes around, so I knew I was awake and sometimes be able to twitch a bit. When It first started I was REALLY scared, I thought someone was trying to take control of me or even worse, that I was becoming possessed. The thought of this is making me want to cry but I have to know. It stopped for about 2-3 years then came back then stopped for about another 3 years and then came back. I'm 18 now and it stopped again but was doing it again about a month ago. I saw something that looked like a black figure on the ceiling and it literally scared me so much I jumped. What I'm wondering is, if I'm having sleep paralysis does this mean I'm Lucid Dreaming? I've never actually tried having Lucid Dreams before, they intrigue me but sound scary, Such as I hear looking at yourself in a Mirror during Lucid, your face will be deformed or you'll have black holes for eyes, and is what I've been experiencing connected to an Evil or Demonic spirit in ANY way. There is strong negative emotion in my house because of all the fighting that is constantly going on and the abuse taken place in it as a child. Could any of these things be connected??

Sleep Paralysis is not a sign of Lucid Dreaming. You - and everyone in the world goes into sleep paralysis when you enter a period of sleep called REM (or Rapid Eye Movement) the reason that you are paralyzed in this cycle of sleep is so that your body does not act out your dreams.

People who attempt to induce Lucid Dreams from a waking state put their bodies to sleep while they keep their mind awake essentially. Sometimes if your body falls asleep before your mind is ready to put you in a dream you can notice the effects of sleep paralysis.

Sleep paraylsis is scary, but nothing to be alarmed about my friend. Your brain will create hallucinations sometimes while in sleep paralysis but they cannot hurt you. Just try and stay calm. I don't have a direct link but I have seen people posting techniques on how to try to wake yourself up from sleep paralysis.

      Nice to meet you marthekitteh,
      Welcome to dv
Firstly I'll start by saying that sleep paralysis is in no way harmful or demonic, it is in fact just the opposite, it is the mechanism by which our body stops us from moving when in a dream. For most people the sleep paralysis cycle links up with their sleep cycle and so they never notice the effects it has, for some however (like yourself) the sleep paralysis sometimes remains even after waking up. This is not common but it is also not rare in most people.
The bad news is that I can't help with stopping the sleep paralysis as I do not know enough about it. The good news is that you have to potential to be able to lucid very frequently if you can do it right.
Almost every member here has tried WILD (Wake induce lucid dream) at least once, this is where you let your body fall asleep but keep your mind awake to enter a dream consciously. We all have to try a lot to get to the stage where our body falls asleep and it can be difficult to master. Lucky for you, that you reach this stage every time you wake up at three.
Next time you wake up with sleep paralysis try to remain calm, close your eyes and try to imagine a place you found comforting. Imagine the scene vividly and imagine being there. If done properly you could enter a dream and instead of being restricted by sleep paralysis you could be doing anything you wanted in a dream
If you need any more help just ask.
