      Plushies!

Let me introduce you to the underappreciated art form of sewing. Note that all of my better plushies are from video games and for the lesser well known ones I will include their official artworks as reference.

Here we have Meta Knight from the Kirby series … as a ball … riding a rainbow. This may sound very random but that´s exactly what one of the games is about.

My next few works will be from the Touhou Project which is a series of Japanese bullet hell shmups with a 100% female cast.

      For reference: http://en.touhouwiki.net/images/f/fe/Th11Kisume.png

Here we have Kisume, a girl who spends her life in a bucket. This was my first bigger project and finishing it greatly boosted my confidence in my abilities. Well my mother helped me with some advice and made the hair.

There is an interesting story to this one. A few months after we finished her, my mother told me she had a dream where she saw a girl in a bucket being carried up into the next floor of a building. I immediately told her that this dream seemed to be inspired by Kisume. Only then my mother realized the similarities between her dream and the plushie we were making. Her subconscious seemed to remember the connection “small girl + bucket” in her dreams while her conscious didn´t until I pointed it out.

I had a similar dream to this one. In my childhood I used to play with a toy with a small blue hose as a whip which I called the “Water Whip”. In the dream someone used a normal sized blue hose as a whip. Only some time after I woke up I noticed the parallels. The scene in the dream seemed way to similar to that toy to call the similarities coincidence, but the dream was still different enough not to directly remind me of it.

Well that´s it for now. I´ll keep this thread updated in the next few days until I run out of plushies to show.

Time for some more custom made plushies.

This thing here is known as a Kedama. It´s basically just a hairball and common enemy in the Touhou games but it has been popularized by the fandom.

Reference (or just look at my avatar): http://en.touhouwiki.net/images/e/e9/Th135_Kokoro1.png

That´s Hata on Kokoro, the embodiment of a mask collection who is unable to express her emotions with her face and has to rely on her masks to show her feelings. I´ve written a few words about the creation process of this doll on my deviantart page. I´m just gonna copy them here:

"I made a couple mistakes here and there but overall she turned out OK considering that this was my first complete doll with arms and legs. At first I planned to add some more details like the buttons on her shirt and the faces on her skirt but decided against it because I was too afraid of ruining her.

The hardest part where the eyes. I tried for hours to find a way to recreate those empty pink eyes Kokoro has, but gave up and tried to give her the same black, painted eyes I gave Kisume. But that ruined everything. Seeing the artwork I worked on for several days ruined in the last second was PHISYCALY painful. So in order to save her I covered these eyes with the ones you see now which look a little odd but at least acceptable."

And that´s all the Touhou plushies done. My next few works will be from Yume Nikki, an RPG Maker game in which you explore the surreal dreamscapes of an isolated girl. There will be plushies from some of its fangames as well which also focus on dream exploration.

This is Mars-san from Yume Nikki, a lone alien hidden deep in a cave on mars. If you stab him with a knife, his eye color will change. That´s why you can see two versions of him on the picture.

It´s Oreko from .flow. She´s an underwater working engineer with a diving helmet.

This girls name is “Me” and she is from the Yume Nikki fangame with the same name. She enjoys removing DCs from existence with her eraser.

And that’s all I have to share. Feel free to tell me your opinions. Some input would be much appreciated.

Not all plushies are nice and cute and adorable.

This thread sure has collected a lot of dust. Maybe I should change that. (And looks like the pictures from my last post just dropped out of existence for some reason.)

Anyway, some time ago (i.e. last year after I dropped this thread like a hot potato) I started crafting finger-puppets. Here are the results.

      Thomas from Somnium

Gingiva (with her companion Chatterteeth) from the game with the same name.

      Koishi Komeji from Touhou

      Yomika from Dream Graffiti.

Thanks, I guess. There are a few more crafts I haven´t shown off yet …but I´m not sure if I will update this thread in the future.

I´ve noticed that the only reason I kept uploading my works here was not to sow happiness by possibly brightening someone’s day with some cute plushies, but to selfishly reap recognition. And that is not at all what I wanted my art to be about. Originally I made these solely for myself simply because I wanted to. Only after some years after I started making them I decided it would be a waste if I were the only person in the world who would fond enjoyment from my works, so I uploaded pictures of them on Deviantart. It´s nice to know that somewhere out there are some people who appreciate what I´m doing, but ultimately I wasn´t actively seeking appreciation.

But at some point I was indirectly invited to show my works here and I was kinda expecting to receive recognition since sewing dolls seems to be an uncommon skill on a non-art centered site. But I ended up being mildly frustrated after I received next to none.

This however completely defies the original purpose of my creations. They´re supposed to embody the joy of creating something with my very own hands regardless of how shareable this joy is. I never wanted the jump on the “do art to get recognized” bandwagon, but when I made this thread I kinda did.

I won´t stop creating more plushies in the future, I never will. But since this thread has been going on for the wrong reasons all along, I will likely drop it for good.
