Teach me how to play chess...

Hi! I'm looking to get into chess more.

I have NO significant background at all. I just know the rules, how pieces move, and that's it.

I do want to learn how to play, though.

So if there's someone out there who knows a bit of game and feels like helping this one noobie along, contact me anytime..
If that person is willing to actually engage in an online game of chess while teaching on IM like MSN or the like, that'd be ideal .

      So.. Anyone?

Chess.com has "Live Chess" with a chat box. I play there quite often. Tell me your username on Chess.com and when you'll be online. I'll show you some of the intricacies about chess.

Let me google that for you

I always like to start with the pawn above the king - move it up two steps. Then on the next move you can generally place the pawn above the queen in a compromised position so that it gets taken. And then you can get revenge with the queen and let her out.

Control the centre of the board, not the edges. Always think as many moves ahead as possible (or at least one more than your opponent). Don't get tunnel vision on one piece or move. Learn all the weird moves like castling, en passant, promotions, etc. Lean how to use knights effectively, they're some of the best pieces in the game. Anything with a long reach, like a rook or a bishop is best used as an area denial piece. Learn about pawn structure. That should be good enough for now.

One thing. Don't be a moron who opens the knights first move with moving it out to the side of the board. Move it to the middle. There's like two moves with it on the edge, a dozen when it's in the middle.

This thread just reminded me that the second round of my online chess tournament started. Fuck, I just found out six games expired....

Gameknot is a really good chess website.

Nothing more I can add except that you should familiarize yourself with the value of the pieces.

I suggest you really practice tactics over and above all. chess.com gives you 3 free problems a day, and those are really helpful. I improved ~200 points just from studying tactics, and those are the key to most games up until ~2000+.

Tactics, tactics, tactics. Find an opening you like, but that's not where games are won and lost. Know your first few moves well, but know how to win from a midgame position really well.

      First things, first.
Getting good at chess is a very time consuming activity, seen by most of people as hobby for nerds and profitable mostly for professionals leaveing the intermediate player with very few opportunities to make money out of it.

However it's a cheap activity wich can entertain you for hours and excersise your mind.

Consider if you really want to spend your time in this game, you could do other things wich might be more interesting, like learning another language, learning to play a musical instrument, learn card games where you can actually get some money(like texas hold'em)etc.

Now that you have been warned, you can do this, go to btjunkie.org and search for Daniel King and find 6 tutorials(mating paterns, pawn structure, openings, etc), study them and I guarantee you, you will be a better chess player, it helped me win the state chess tournament of my university.

Start playing chess frecuently, join a chess club, play online or play with friends. Go to tournaments (if you are in school try make a chess club or going to scholastic chess tournaments)
Learn chess notation and start recording your games to review them later and try to improve them.
Get some chess books. (or read chess sites)
Learn whats your style it's either a wild tactician or calm strategist and choose your opennings according to your style.
      STUDY ENDINGS.
      Learn to play blindfold chess.

Well there you have it for the fun side you can learn to play chess variants, blitz games, etc. For playing online I truly recommend Buho21 - jugar en línea: Ajedrez, Trivia, Parchís, Domino, Gomoku, Reversi y Damas
