I have been in the scene of iPod hacking since I got my iPod Touch 2G in 2007. If you have any questions about jailbreaking, theming, and what to do, just ask.

I've always wondered about this. I got a new iPod touch for christmas and want to try jailbreaking it (once the warranty is up). What kinds of things have you done with your jailbroken iPod?

Mainly themes and useful mods like less annoying notifications and a drop down menu that lets you toggle things like wifi on and off at will.

If you have the newer iPod, then jailbreaking it would be a pain since Apple has security measures against jailbreaking even though it isn't illegal. You'd need to connect it to your computer whenever you want to turn it on.

That's unfortunate. I do have a 1G ipod touch, but I'm giving it to my mom since I don't use it anymore.

New jailbreak out, if you need help, just ask. I know jailbreaks for all devices, firmware 3.0 and up.

I jailbroke my iTouch 4G. And I have absolutely no problems. I certainly don't have to use a computer to turn it on...

Are there any reasons to jailbreak your iPod touch other than non-app store apps?

And iPod jailbreaking is still technically illegal I'm pretty sure. The iPhone unlocking from carriers was deemed legal.

Somebody just got arrested for hacking the PS3 to run any firmware.

The new greenpois0n fixes that. I meant with 4.2.1, since that post was made a while ago.

iPod jailbreak just got a DMCA exception, so it may still be illegal in some countries, but not the US. Sony is a different company, and they have much stricter rules when it comes to hacking, as CFW has not been granted a DMCA exception.

Impossibiru! limera1n was for 4.1...

Jailbreaking is exploiting your iPod Touch so it could have themes and tweaks and third party apps.

I jailbroke my iPhone 4 a while ago. When it was just a tethered jailbreak. Which wasn't an issue, because I always keep my phone charge and never turn it off. But Greenpoison came out and fixed that anyways.

Jailbreaking is legal in Canada and US, though Apple holds the right to void your warranty. However, it's easy enough to restore to factory settings leaving no trace of the jailbreak behind.

Also, "Unlocking" is different than jailbreaking. Unlocking allows you to use service providers other than those that are "locked" to the phone. Jailbreaking simply removes any software restrictions and limitations related to third-party non-licensed applications.

Jailbreaking is absolutely harmless if you know what you're doing. There is an easy fix for every possible problem that you can encounter. You may have heard of the dreaded "bricking" of a phone... well there are several easy fixes. Any software malfunction can be fixed, but you'll likely need some programs on your PC or Mac in order to fix them. Tiny umbrella and USBview are commonly used to fix certain problems.

I'd say that, for me anyways, jailbreaking was worth it. Many people don't think it's worth the trouble. One problem with excuse is that it's really no trouble at all. You can jailbreak your iDevice in just a few minutes with no experience. Every program (redsnow, greenpoison etc) uses a super simple interface with step-by-step guides. My grandma could jailbreak an iPhone. And like I said, it's easily reversable... so it couldn't hurt to try.

The tweaks, themes, and emulators are my favorite parts. The tweaks are just handy functionalities like adding a extra column on homepages or adding updates to your lockscreen like live weather or email, the themes are just themes, and the emulators.... well... I can play SNES, NES, Genesis etc on my iPhone. Nuff said.
