It's kind of weird for me, when I was younger I got so used to calling my mom "mommy" that it felt weird changing it to mom, for some odd reason, and I never refered to her like that before, so now I don't really call her anything, when I want to speak to her, I just go to her and talk. My dad, is kind of the same deal, though I often refer to him as "daddy" just because it is common in my siblings, so it doesn't seem as babyish.

when refering to them though I call them mom and dad, or mother and father.

Mom & Dad for me. Maybe when I was way little it was something else, but not in a long time.

Oh, I see. Ok, well that makes a little more sense. Sorry.

Might as well address people by their actual names.
And I do understand the idea that people should just call people by their names. Well, I understand someone not being close to their parents and feeling that way anyway.

Names are titles to identify the person. "mom" and Dad" ("mother" and "father," "mummy" and "poppy," "mater" and "pater," "madre" y "padre") are titles meant to identify the adressee's station, as compared to the speaker. In this case, the title is subject specific, and the subjects (1st-generation descendants) address the parent by title, while others are not only not required to do so, but also strongly suggested to use a different title, or a name, depending on social rank and familiarity.

Personally, I don;t much like the heirqarchy this imposes, though it's traditional, and I was going to say something about identification, but forgot. It makes sense, so I;m not going to try and undermine the system, though it would also be useful in the case of lost children if parents would teach their kids their real names, and not just their titles.

I've never spoken to my father, so if I refer to him, it's "my father." My Mom is Mom now, but until I was fourteen it was only Mother in all situations, I think because when I was very young everyone in the house called my grandmother "Mom," so she was Mom and my mother was Mother.
If you have a sense of caring for others, you will manifest a kind of inner strength in spite of your own difficulties and problems. With this strength, your own problems will seem less significant and bothersome to you. By going beyond your own problems and taking care of others, you gain inner strength, self-confidence, courage, and a greater sense of calm.Dalai Lama
