      And buckyballs, those are cool

All water contains some heavy water, it's impossible to make a completely pure liquid.

Not impossible, but it would be damn difficult to get a water sample with absolutely no heavy water molecules.

Look at the atomic mass of hydrogen on a periodic table. There's a reason why it's not exactly 1.

I recently watched The History Channel and they were discussing how such a large volume of water is extracted to gain such a small fraction of heavy water.
      I can't find the ratio.

I did find this if you didn't already know. I thought it was interesting.

Heavy water is about 10 percent denser than regular water. Its specific gravity is 1.106. Since regular water weighs 8.34 pounds per gallon, a gallon of heavy water, therefore, weighs 9.22 pounds.

This just in: Heavy water is heavy. More at 11.

Nerdy discussion of physics makes me very happy. <3

But I must ask, for what application do you need colder-than-freezing liquid water?

Just happens in thunderstorms and it was intriguing to me.
Also do they use this to cool isotopes for reactors? I thought they used super cooling for the reactors.

      Oh. I see.

[Mental note: Watch out for Howie. He is obviously building some sort of Arctic warfare device.]

I think Howie predicts an Ice Age.
