      Cool Ask me about Metal!

Any kind of Metal, just don't expect me to know some garage band from Iowa who has one Album and two fans on MySpace.

      You may ask about:

      ~Genre Descriptions
      ~Popular Bands of specific Genres
~The Difference between Hard Rock and Metal
      ~Metal's history
      ~Is this Metal or not?
~Screamo, I know you have stereotypes about it guys.

      Dang, beaten.

Demon Parasite: Because it's good music. Despite the uncivilized reputation it has, there are bands with amazing class and eloquence when it comes to lyrics and composition. Then, there are the bands of screaming and guitar-smashing that allows you to feel the rush and energy that some people find addicting.

Cloakt: I like the band Helloween, an awesome Power Metal band out of Germany. Even though they have earned fame in Europe and especially Japan, they remain the U.S. Metal Underground.

Power metal isn't my favorite kind, but I listened to a few of their songs and they are pretty good. More of a groove metal person, myself.

I like black metal. Mostly ambient and melodic. I have a weakspot for progressive black metal, it's really rare and such a treat.

I'm in a black metal band called Necrotic Cyst, we call ourselves black metal, because we use a lot of the same ellements, but really we just play metal.

My favorite band is Wolves in the Throne Room, they refuse the title of "black metal" but they are. Haha. They are good, solid, preformers, they write good uplifting music (uncharacteristic for the genre), and they have a fuckin' cool image. I like the down tempo rifts and beats, I like the lyrics, and the female guest vocalist. Check 'em out.

I listen to metal because I am a high energy guy. I like the blast beats and the heavy tone. I like minor chords and driving melodys. I listen to a lot of new age and middle eastern music, so I have a strong fondness in my heart for throte singing: which is where growling and screaming comes from. I'm not an angry person, but sometimes I get fed up and metal just matches my tempo. There is a kind of metal for everyone. Everyone. So many sub genres, so many differnt bands. If you like music, there is a metal band you'll like. That's why there is so much bitterness within metal communitys, and so much discution over metal: everybody likes more metal.

If you have any questions about things, I have another well rounded view on things. Metal and art is my life.

jk, I know you're just trying to present another viewpoint. Tell you what, I'll edit the OP to include you, since you seem to cover Black Metal, which I honestly (even though I'm Norwegian) don't like that much.

Huh, I can't seem to edit the OP... That's annoying as hell.

      Sorry if I'm generalizing....

Why is the music screaming and not understandable (lyrics wise)?
My son likes a group... ??? Avenged Sevenfold (haha... I had to search my email to remember).
The melody is BEAUTIFUL for several songs I tried. But as soon as they opened their mouth, I was lost.

My son says if you listen to metal long enough, you'll start to understand what's being said. Is that true? Or is the music mostly about raw emotion where the lyrics are kind of secondary?

No disrespect intended. I honestly don't understand the appeal.

I really like Disturbed and Slayer, but I need some new music. Can you suggest something like them?

Metal comes in several types and subtypes. Some people go from Beautiful melodies and lyrics along with amazing compilation, to more raw sound but still meaningful lyrics, and all the way down to all out screaming and thrashing, and everything in between.

To me, metal appeals to my emotions through several pathways (you can see those pathways through the links I posted). Some people push this with the instruments, and others with lyrics. If you find some lyrics online of Avenged Sevenfold, you'll see their purpose and influences. (religion, war, etc)

Yes, if you listen long enough, any song will make sense. Through the tone, lyrics, and so on, you can determine what the song means.

all i've been able to listen to in the metal department for some time is Irepress. it's instrumental, which i love because i generally do not like hearing a guy sing (or vocals in general). Samus Octology is an incredible album - the dynamics are great, it's not all JUGGA-JIGGA-WUGGA and distortion and whatnot.

I dislike it when people call Avenged Sevenfold (I realize this is not your fault). They're such a terrible band, and most people associate them with metal just because they have double-bass drums and guitar solo's and occasionally scream-y/growl-y vocals.

Thanks for the information and links. I'll check them out later when I wake up more

Is Metallica Metal? And how would you classify Avenged Sevenfold?
I always took Metallica as hard rock. I like some of their songs (Piggy, Unforgiven (?), grrr, and another I can't recall right now).

Wat about the singer (can't recall his name right now) who sings "Rooster". Ahhh, Alice in Chains. I like of of his songs as well.

Metallica is totally metal, or more specifically Thrash Metal.

Take the song "Master of Puppets" for example. They have heavy riffs, speed, and the oh-so important solos. Although ususally these characteristics can apply to other genres, thrash is special because of how centralized the songs are around these traits. If one part is missing, then it isn't thrash. Simple.

I would call Avenged Sevenfold (A7X for short) to be part of the New Wave of American Heavy Metal. It's a movement in the U.S. which, in essence, rebels against Nu Metal. Nu Metal takes inspiration from punk and hip-hop, and metal purists immediately rejected it. Those metal purists came and made the bands that compose the NWOAHM.

Nu metal was actually the way I got into listening to metal, but I don't like it that much anymore. It's kind of cheesy, atleast the music by KoRn is.

This is kind of obscure, but can you explain what characterizes doom metal? And have you ever even heard of funeral doom?
