That does sound akin to hypnagogia (after the daydreaming part) which is as you say is very unstable because once you 'notice' it then you sort of jolt awake.
Personally I do love to mess about in the hypnagogic state as I find it highly creative, albeit unstable as you rightly point out.
If you are trying for an LD using that technique, or any that you have read about, then it would best to try after about 5 to 6 hours of solid sleep, or after a morning WBTB rather than at the start of the night, because your REM periods are longest early morning which increases your chances of having an LD.
There are a lot of techniques which could be employed. It is finding one that best suits you and your lifestyle. There are various WILD techniques If you are interested in that route, however I cannot recommend an individual one as it depends on the person, nor am I conversant with that particular technique. (I mainly do DILD's myself.)
      Good luck.

That 'trip' you refer to (correct me if I'm mistaken) sounds like the 'hypnic jerk' which is a natural occurence as you are trying to go to sleep. It is often accompanied by a 'falling' sensation, etc.
