To comment on the other side of this, everyone knows how to fall asleep in the normal way. if you are comfortable and fall asleep fast you may not have kept any awareness into sleep. You then must instantly enter a dream or you fail. By staying on your back you will have trouble drifting off. That is good. You would then calm your mind and do your "anchor" so you do not stay mentally active, but do stay mentally aware. If you do not fall truly asleep in that position you will encounter a need to roll on our side. It will seem urgent, 'must roll over!' Do not give in the first couple times, keep trying to enter sleep aware. Then if your body refuses to sleep, but has been begging to roll over after around the third time you think you must roll over, do it. Done correctly your body will plummet into instant sleep when you go to your side, hopefully faster than you loose awareness (keep up the anchor). With practice and luck you will have tricked your body into sleep with your awareness intact.
This method is not the only way to do it, but honestly the easiest path (no discomfort or real effort) rarely is the right way to reach a goal.
