Maintaining balance between sleep and wakefulness

When I'm drifting off to sleep and trying to lucid dream, I'm trying to figure out just how to maintain the perfect balance between the parts of my brain the need to go to sleep and the parts that need to stay awake- it feels like a very precise and fragile thing to hold on to and I would really appreciate knowing any secrets to it

I don't know the secret....I have not really mastered the classic WILD technique. I do know that there is a very special place just between awake and a'dream where some serious magic happens for me. Holding off sleep for as long as possible brings amazing HI and sometimes lets me access my dream body and drift away a bit.

I have, on occasion, lost the fight the other way and remained away for hours in a kind of a clear light dreamless place that left me feeling amazing.

A strong mantra helps me stave off sleep. I have also found that a more upright position in bed is crucial....get that second pillow positioned just right so your brain is not thinking it's definitely sleep time.

Some of my strongest LD's have come from simply giving in to sleep when I knew I was losing the fight and slipping into a more DILD event right away.
The more I gaze....the more I crave to see

When you next stand at cliff's edge....will you finally learn to fly?

Unfortunately, Dane, as far as I know, there is no secret to straddling that fence between wake and sleep (and successfully falling of the right side of it into a dream); there is only practice, patience, and a good lucid mindset.

That sucks, I know, but I spent many years looking for shortcuts and secrets and -- though many have claimed a secret or two -- it turns out the only secret to successful transitions to lucidity is keeping at it; getting used to that place between wake and sleep. Also, of course, developing a solid lucid mindset so that transition doesn't matter much is even more important. And, unfortunately, both of these things will consume a lot of time.

I know that's not really what you wanted to hear, but it it's what I got. What I also got, if you're interested, is my DVA WILD class, which is basically designed around successfully navigating that WILD transition -- there's not too much in the way of secrets or go-to techniques there, but it might help you develop the mindset and patience that you're looking for.

There is a lot to be gained during the learning process, though.....so enjoy the ride.

On this chart, I notice the emotions closer to sleepy seem to be better for falling asleep. Feeling relaxed is probably better for falling asleep consciously than apathetic.

I think if our emotions get too far from sleepy (including and past distant or confident), it's going to be difficult to fall asleep.

Maybe feeling peaceful is best for falling asleep consciously. More specifically, maybe feeling pensive or responsive is best.
