Loads of people report the same thing (RCs not working). It could be of course that you just haven't done enough yet to make it a habit that carries over to sleep. But it may never do. For example - I never eat in my dreams, or go to the toilet, or brush my teeth, or put on clothes, put on my glasses, turn on the telly, etc, etc,.
I have done RCs plenty of times to check my suspicions that I'm dreaming - but only after something else has made me realise the unreality of the dreamscene - many other people say the same. If it weren't for others swearing by the method I would say it was a myth/ red herring.
I have a theory that if RCs do work they probably work better (like many things) if they are tailored to your learning / perceiving mode. (see the first link in my sig) E.g. if you are primarily visual then counting your fingers, looking at a clock, or trying to read might be better than trying to breath through your nose (which would suit kinesthetic poeple better).
RE your DC testing you - hmm... they do do that! Last night I was dreaming of being chased by a giant around a museum - I was flying to escape and wasn't in danger, which is a shame because its often fear that triggers lucidity for me. But, whatever, I still didn't question the unreality. I think its because I've been flying in dreams for 30+ years... There's a thread about this (i.e. not spotting obvious dreamsigns) somewhere.
