      Lightbulb subliminal messages help?

I read somewhere about subliminal messages controlling consumer behaviors in ads... so can this be applied to lucid dreaming as well? if subliminal messages can really control/alter our subconscious then wouldn't this be the best and easiest way of attaining lucidity?

The keyword is reliability. Subliminals aren't reliable unless we are bombarded by them repeatedly. Just like commercials. I watched a movie on television last night (I rarely watch TV. The only thing TV set is good for is plugging in a videogame console) and saw the same advertisement during each commercial break. The movie was two hours, with at least ten commercial breaks. Poison to the mind, I say. And have you been to Menards recently? "Save big money, save big money" blaring through the speakers in the next isle, and constantly humming from the high ceiling. Insanity.

But I digress. Back to lucid applications. I'm no subliminal expert, but based on my logic I think that the message would have the best effect if it told you to do something. Sure, a message that said "become lucid" may get a lucid once in a blue moon, but "realize you are dreaming" may help even more (you are more familiar with 'realize' and 'dreaming than 'lucid'). Even better still is "do a reality check," "you like reality checks" or "[insert actual reality check name here]" (because this actually suggests that you do something tangible).

The claims about subliminal messages controlling consumer behavior are all bogus. Subliminal messages have no effect beyond the placebo effect.

Umm, how can there be placebo, if you don't know the subliminal messages are there?

Notice I said "no effect beyond the placebo effect". Subliminal tapes are usually marketed with specific claims, such as "if you listen to this, you will have lucid dreams," and then you may get a placebo effect. On the other hand, if you are listening to a tape and have no reason to believe that there are subliminal messages on it, there is no effect at all.

Sure. It's not just on YouTube. If you search for "subliminal tapes" you'll find that it's a whole damn industry. The problem is that none of it has any scientifically documented effect beyond the placebo effect.

The placebo effect is achieved when you have a desired effect from pure belief that it will work.

Let me give you an example:

There have been studies done using placebos in hospitals. Patients are given pills that are actually sugar pills but they are told they are drugs to help them recover from the illness, and due to the patient's belief in the healing properties of the pill, they've healed.

      Beliefs are very powerful.

Yeah, that's cool, but I've seen David Copperfield perform far more impressive tricks.

If you are interested in the scientific work that has been done on subliminal persuasion, I would recommend that you start with this paper. However, as the paper points out, it is important to distinguish between two different things:
      • Subliminal perception. That is, that you can perceive something subconsciously without perceiving it consciously. This has been scientifically verified, and is not controversial.
      • Subliminal suggestions that influence behavior. The old example is that a movie can be manipulated so that some single frames flash images of popcorn and coke on the screen, and these images cannot be perceived consciously. According to the mythology this would make people go and buy popcorn and coke. But there is no scientific evidence that this works.

I know this is couple of years old thread, but i just started to use software for generating subliminal messages on PC, so when you set it up, meaning you will insert your own messages in to it, they will be flashing on your PC screen in intervals you will set and only your subconsciousness will notice them, software is called Bullet Brain, i have links for full version but I don't know if can post it in here, can I?
Anyway, you can have a look on it at brainbullet.com

I have given about 4 of my friends lucid dreams on their very first try by using the placebo affect on them. Make them believe, and they will achieve.
