If you want my advice, no, don't hurt yourself like that! When I first started attempting WILD, I would lie awake for an hour, give up, and not fall back asleep for either another hour, or even for the rest of the morning. Talk about frustrating! I'd take care of your existing sleep problems first. Summer is the perfect chance to make your sleep schedule balanced and consistent, which should help your body naturally adjust to sleep. I'm assuming you are already avoiding the use of stimulants and exercise before bed!
As for DILDs, how long have you been trying? For me, it took a couple weeks before the reality checks gave me my first lucid dream. Don't give up! And besides, even when you do manage a WILD, what if you think you are actually awake? Reality checks help in WILDs, too (so that you can distinguish a false awakening from a real one).
Good luck!
