A method I have read about which is similar to what Atras said is to pay attention to the breath. People say there are inner breaths related to the various inner bodies, and you can become aware of them that way.
Another very similar method is to pay attention to your capacity to feel, and learn to distinguish it from the things you feel. One variation of this is to think about feeling throughout one's body. I've tried that a couple of times, and it creates a sort of avalanche of feeling, like waves through my body.
I don't meditate, for pretty much the same reason I don't lift weights. I find it boring. I enjoy physical exercise if I'm doing something though, like work outside. And I enjoy focusing my mind if I have something I'm trying to understand. (As a consequence, it seems I'm somewhat of dependent on circumstances for my development. Some parts of my body are very strong, others not so much, and that's the same with my mind I guess. Right now I need more upper body exercise, to keep my weight up, and I need something like that with the active side of my imagination also.)
