I believe in SOME of the "spiritual new age junk." I believe in souls/ghosts. I also believe that the souls of my dead family, friends, pets, etc come to visit occasionally. I know that a lot of people look at such belief as illogical and crazy. I know it IS illogical, but I'm not willing to ignore the experiences I have had or the value of those experiences. That said, on to answering your question....
I usually have what I like to call "family reunion" dreams where everyone who has died is all in one big house. We sit around a huge table and eat, talk, joke. Sometimes my relatives have specific questions to ask me, but at times we just hang out. On rare occasions I get messages for other family members from them.
Earlier this year I had surgery under general anesthesia, where the doctors knock you out. I had always heard that people don't dream during anesthesia. But it turns out you can dream once your body starts to come out of it. In the recovery room I had a dream where I talked to my recently deceased Granny. She had died about three weeks before. I was so surprised to see her (and thought it was impossible to dream under anesthesia) so I thought I had died! But I was just having an LD. We talked a little and she asked me about my health. Then I woke up.
As to techniques for causing an LD where you dream about a dead loved one, I would just suggest to try summoning the person you want to talk to when you realize you are dreaming. Whether this will be their soul you talk to or just a memory of them, I can't say. But when comparing an LD to prayer, I think the message could get through to them.
