    Rock Candy

This was a a very vivid, pleasant lucid dream. My Task of the Month attempt didn't succeed, but it was a beautiful experience nonetheless. Also, this is the third time that my dad's DC has hinted to me that I'm dreaming and finally I listened!

    Color legend: Non-dream Dream Lucid

    Lucid #86: Rock Candy

I'm standing at the door of a lakehouse with Dad, recounting an extraordinarily vivid dream from earlier in the night. I lean against the doorframe, looking out over the water. "I can't believe how much of this stuff you remember," he says. "And then that whole 'vivid dreaming' thing you do."

"Yeah," I respond. "It's actually called 'lucid dreaming'." It hits me
that this is all a dream. I step outside to a wooden walkway, leap over the railing and take flight over the lake. "I'm dreaming right now!" I shout over my shoulder.

"That's amazing," I hear him say as I cruise away over the lake. I pass through a cypress canopy and get high enough to survey the lake. The lake stretches as far as I can see, its surface criss-crossed by dirt paths that are decorated with beautiful marble archways.

I land on one of these paths and walk along for a while, enjoying the serenity of the moment. I pass a bulbous, bright blue flower that's the size of a basketball. Its petals ripple gently in the sun and give off a glow that looks like a bloom effect you'd find in a video game. Just before I come to a marble archway, I find a pile of rocks and think of the Task of the Month (find a piece of coal and change it into a diamond.)

I dig through the rock pile, hunting for coal. The closest thing that I can find is a black, rectangular hunk of glassy, volcanic-looking rock. It looks too crystalline so I get the bright idea of crushing it into coal by popping it in my mouth and chewing it up. I bite a hunk of the rock off and begin to chew. The taste is amazing! It's like a homemade raisin bar with just a hint of chocolate. I'm immediately reminded of the goodies Mom would bake when I was a kid.

I wander the paths for a long while, contentedly passing under the shadows of archways, walking by strange, brightly glowing plants, and happily biting off pieces of this delicious black rock. I feel immensely pleased with what I've created for myself and unmotivated to change anything.

Eventually my path takes me to an ancient-looking stone wall. Oddly, there is a working escalator alongside the wall, and I board it, curious where it leads. As I ride up, I pass many people that I know, most memorably my friend DX (who I recently saw for the first time in over a year.) His short hair has been replaced by an enormous ball afro. We swap greetings, but the escalator quickly moves us past one another.

At the top of the escalator, I remember Task of the Month and spit out a bit of the black rock to see if it's coal-like enough to work. Unfortunately, it's more like slightly sticky, finely-chewed glass. I look back at the escalator and see Fedora, a guy that I used to know in college but was never friends with. I say, "Fedora, go ahead and give me that piece of coal you have." It works! Fedora hands me a perfect lump of coal and I get to work on squeezing it. It's becoming smaller and smaller, and I feel like a tiny diamond is beginning to form. Fedora demands that I give him the diamond when I'm finished since it's "his". I'm about to tell him that this is fine when the dream gets really unstable.

I prepare to DEILD, and it goes black.
I'm very aware of my body now, almost awake. I release all awareness of my body and try to let the dream take me under. Apparently I let my self-awareness go too, because I'm shortly back in the dream, but no longer lucid.

I'm standing about twenty feet from the escalator talking with my friend The Schwartz and another person that I can no longer recall. "So what went wrong?" asks The Schwartz. I walk them through the last portion of the dream in detail. As I'm describing what happened, I see an attractive stranger in her early 20s eyeing me. She smiles and waves me over. Excited, I begin walking toward her but suddenly feel super guilty. I remember that I'm married and feel like a dirtbag. Then
I remember that I'm dreaming and feel awesome again. The stranger smiles and turns away, an older guy (her boyfriend?) draping his arm over her shoulder and walking away with her. I start thinking about Task of the Month again, but the dream fades...

How much fun! Dream food is the best (even when it's not really food). I'm a little jealous that you always end up outside in your lucids, seems like I always end up inside and never have the presence of mind to leave If you ever have the inclination to draw I'd love to see what these places look like!

Thanks! You are so right about the dream food... I had no idea! I guess you've tasted food before in your dreams. (I didn't remember whether you had.) I had no idea that it would be so delicious. I mean, damn.

You're right, even though I've occasionally griped about dreams where I get a little stuck in a house or building, on the whole I do manage to get outside pretty regularly. If you ever run into trouble leaving, one thing that has sometimes worked really well for me is to find Exit signs. For whatever reason, I have strongly internalized the idea that Exit signs will be there and they they will truthfully show me the way out. So when I start hunting around for them, it often does the trick.

Having said that, you've had some pretty darn good LDs even indoors. Your indoor flight was some of the coolest flying I've seen!

It's a shame that I'm such a poor artist. I always want to be able to put my visual ideas/memories to paper, but my drawings all come out looking like they were done by a 4th grader. I'm being really literal when I say that, too. You can see why I'm such a big supporter of humanity getting that "dream recorder" technology fully worked out.

Yeah, lots of times, I don't think any in an LD though. The real thing always pales in comparison. But rocks? Who knew rocks could taste good? If you see something IWL see if it matches the taste in your head

Hm. I will try to look for those! It just needs to occur to me to actually leave first... or maybe I can turn into a werewolf and bust through the wall. That would save time.

One of my teachers told me that people come back to drawing at the same skill level they left off. For example, if you stopped drawing regularly in the fourth grade, you'd have a fourth grader's drawing talents. I'd love to draw some of mine but I'm not particularly good at it either. I like instant mastery of skills.

SOOOO CLOOOOSEE! Cool dream though. I really like the pathways on the lake. It sounds very peaceful.

I've had only one lucid where something tasted amazing but I was blind. If Dr. Pepper tasted as good as that dream I would have an unlimited supply stock piled in my house.

That's cool that you remember to eat every now and then in your NLDs. I hope I get more chances to try it. This is the first time I can remember tasting anything truly delicious. In spite of everything I know about lucid dreaming, I guess I always thought that the experience of taste would be a bit hollow and unrealistic. I was so very very wrong. And yeah, like you said, I'll never look at volcanic rock the same way again. It's so weird, but even now I have this sensation that this is what a volcanic rock should taste like.

I'd still love to dive in like a taste synesthete in an LD and find out what colors taste like.

Yeah, remembering these ideas is (more than) half the battle, I find. I have to really work to keep my techniques in mind. I like the werewolf idea a lot, not only because it sounds really fun but also because it'd flow so well with what you already know is possible in werewolf form. (Specifically, that you'll be really really strong, and walls won't hold you.)

I hadn't heard that, but it's very insightful. It makes sense, too, doesn't it? If you stop trying to ride a bike while you're still on training wheels, you can't expect to jump on a bike when you're an adult and be amazing at it.

Thanks, man! It really was a peaceful scene. My previous NLD had been a lot more hectic, action-packed, and... uh, menthol-y. So the change of pace was unexpected but really nice. I felt very content.

Oh yeah, I remember your Dr. Pepper dream! When I was thinking of all the cool stuff that we've had happen in the void, I totally forgot about your Dr. Pepper chugging. That's really cool. I tell you, man, I look at the void so differently now than I did before. It's one of the most powerful dream locales you can wind up in.

Wow, totally amazing sounding dream CL. I havnt been able to fly in a lucid yet, im going to have to make an effort to remember. The dreamscape is amazing too. Dreams like this make me wish there was a DVR for recording dreams lol.

Thanks, man! Ahh, you are gonna love flight. Next time you have bust your way out of a Walmart exit door, just get up there in the sky where you belong. It is awesome. (Flight actually took a little work for me, but so very worth it.)

And I'm 100% with you that we badly need that dream recorder technology! Man, I'd just be marveling at dream videos all during my WBTB. It would be a great way for dream enthusiasts to collaboratively build common dream settings, too. If I read about someone's amazing dream and then spend some time watching the video, I could learn the setting well enough to experience it for myself. Just cool in about a million different ways!

Hahaha, that was pretty awesome. Imagine if such rocks could be found all around the ground in waking life!

One great thing about being into lucid dreaming is that we can create worlds like that for ourselves when reality falls short. I know that I'll be doing a lot more with food in future LDs! Pretty eye-opening.

Between this and your epic pig-out in the last DJ entry, the DJ section's going to start reading like a foodie blog.

I know what you mean! I'm really hoping I'll get lucky enough to land right in front of a plate full of food again.

Think of all the wonderful recipes we could get from peoples' dreams! I had a dream I logged here like a year ago where my mom was making me a sandwich made with french toast as the bread and some unidentified breakfast sandwich ingredients in the middle, then covered in syrup. There was bacon on the side of the plate too. It looked so good!! But I woke up before I got to eat it. But I always thought that it sounded like it would be great in real life!

I was doing okay until you mentioned that the whole thing was drenched in syrup. Then your subC had to throw in bacon... I'd be tempted to just whip one of those sandwiches up after that. How much teasing can one endure?
