      Question Thought Process

      Hey everyone,

I just have a question regarding the thought process during a lucid dream. I am not very experienced, but I've noticed that though I'm very aware of the fact I'm dreaming, my thought process is still very convoluted. For example, in one case I was back at my house, realized I was dreaming, and came to the conclusion that if I give my parents gifts in the dream world, they would wake up happier. That's not something I would conclude while awake.

I'm just curious as to how clearly more advanced oneironauts think during the dreams, and if one's thoughts become more seamless to how they think when they are awake as opposed to when they're asleep in bed .

      Thanks for any insight,
      -Josh

From your first example I assume you simply loss lucidity and continued on with the dream. For me I like to shout as loud as I can "I'm dreaming" "I'am Lucid" until I'am happy with the stability and then I move on to imagining a small spiky rubber ball in my left hand and continuously roll it around in my palm to keep my mind stimulated and if at anytime I feel like the dream is about to collapse or I'm about to lose lucidity I will spin in a circle to teleport to another area or let it happen and make sure my eyes are closed and go back to sleep fully aware that I'm still dreaming.

Thanks a lot for the response. Keeping the spiky ball in particular seems like a really interesting idea, and I'll definitely try that next time if I'm able to.

It is a skill that develops with training. Even with decades of work some times your thoughts are illogical. The first steps in developing rational thought that I teach are 1) attempt to remember where your real body is 2) try to remember what time of year it is IRL and how old you are.

Hey I might be able to give you a tip.
I noticed that in all my LDs that are MILDs (what I refer to as MILD is when an LD starts with me gaining lucidity in the dream) my thoughts are highly irrational and usually those LDs are short and blurry.
However when I try WILD this is completely different. The difference is huuuge, like comparing a painting by your average 4-year old and a famous artist - both in dream quality and my logical thinking. Not many report this, but maybe you're like me, if you've never tried WILD I suggest you do.

How do you know that this is not a dream ?

Our critical thinking system is less active when we are asleep. So if you perform indirect dream entries such as DILD and become aware of the dream, you will be less critical compared to the direct method like WILD where you instead go from waking consciouness with a critical thinking system up and running to the dream without the same loss.

Probably has something to do with this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=93U3FHD__LY

This doesn't mean that one should avoid the indirect methods, they can be stabilized in the same degree it just takes a little more directed intention and will.

But these situations are really annoying, sometimes I waste a lucid dream just to try to get money that I can save on my bank for later...

Only to wake and be like "Awww why didn't I ride a dragon or something..."

I would conclude those things such as giving gifts in dreams while awake so i don't notice much difference in my thought process. i do notice that some lucid dreams have been rational with more lucid control while others are more illogical and dream-like thoughts are just accepted without further inquiry. That is only one dream actually where I stopped rational analyzing and just went with the flow which was consequently very interesting upon later analysis. There's a fine line where I had to stop myself from mindlessly indulging and tried to control the dream. That's where I woke up. Although I am sure that this action stopped me from losing lucidity and forgetting everything altogether!

I recently tried WILDing the past two nights, and I have to say the change in dream quality was impressive. I wasn't lucid, but both times my dreams have been incredibly vivid. I think I'm going to keep trying this until I can become lucid somewhat consistently before attempting DILDs again. Thanks for the advice.
