      Problems with flying - theory

you can do almost anything in your LDs if you have the concentration and imagination, but you have to know in your subconsious and consious mind what it would be like... you cant know what something feels like if you have never experienced it. Obviously most impossible things you have tried in your dreams have worked, but those things you have some idea how they would come about, or what they would look/feel like ect... but flying in mid air with no aid of anything else is something your mind has no knowledge about (or hardly any), so the nearest thing to actually doing it would be to think in depth about it, or go swimming (which is a similar concept to flying)! the swimming idea is a really good one because it's the nearest thing you have experienced to flying. sorry i rambled!!!!!!

I'm totally agree. Also I want to mention the self-trust issue, I think thats like sooo important, because I've tried to fly before and when you aren't convinced about the fact that you can fly, you just go down, everything in the dream world is about believing, thats the way we can create our own things in the dream.

And another tip, some people can fly simply by moving their arms up and down, I haven't tried yet, but it seems logical, almost all the time we need a physical action to make a reaction happen, like when spinning, it's easier that way than just thinking to change the surroundings. See ya

I find I can fly without becoming lucid. usually I just start moving my physical position up and forwards. One dream I had to cross 2 sticks together and I would gain the ability to fly. A dream I had about 2 weeks ago i was in a gymnasium and I was just changing gravity so i could run up the walls and on the ceiling. But I find that if i fly or use dream powers too much, the abilities weaken... its annoying, but I usually wake up shortly afterwards.

Lavos - that's so funny I had a non-lucid once where I was flying around my grade school gymnasium on a boogie board. Was pretty cool.

But as far as flying its strange, if I try to fly in a lucid while I'm inside it never works, but as soon as I open the door and see the big open outside world I just put my arms up and take off zooming around all over the place. Though I think a couple times when I was in the air I had a bit of trouble accelerating. Felt like something was holding me back. Same kind of feeling like when you try to run in a dream but can't.

You always have some idea how everything will feel. Might not be right but that doesn't really matter, should still be able to do it.

Yes, this flying stuff can vary so much... sometimes I can do it and sometimes I just can't... I often have a problem with developing a great speed too fast, or I fly verticaly and in just a few seconds everything is far below. I guess the control is a matter of concentration.

Just last night I was having problems flying, doing the superman, I was in battle, with a machine like thing, I had jumped up in the air because I had disabled it for a moment and was going to blast it with the light from a distance. I flew upwards and began to focus my beam but it recovered and started to fly up at me with its jump jets or whatever they were, I tried pulling backwards but I couldent go fast enough I was focusing too much on focusing energy and keeping the machine targeted. Then I remembered...

I materialised my dragon shape and dropped the superman when I do manage to remember I can become a dragon I have no problems flying at all because I was born to fly in that form and there is no doubt of my abilty to fly as such. So I out ran it badkwinging and blasted it with the light. *poof*

The question I ask is How do I know what the breath of the air over my wings lifting me, the subtle shift of air pressure as I near a thermal, the odd sensation of having 6 limbs and a tail, the cold crisp dry air of the high altitudes feels. Because I can remember those sensations just as clearly as I can remember riding a bike. I am not refuting your theory as I do agree with you. I do think there is a difference between thinking and knowing how somethinging feels, but perhaps that difference is only in the mind? *shrugs* Swiming has helped in the past too =) Thats a weird sensation though when your up in the air hehe.

I think it's more like "this person says it's hard, so i am expecting it to be hard." So your brain makes it hard for you. A bit like "reading in lucid dreams". Stephen LaBerge bangs on about how hard it is to read in Lucid Dreams, but some people (I think seeker is one), can read perfectly fine.

I've never found flying to be a problem. I read somewhere some time ago that most people find the opposite difficult, that when first becoming lucid, alot of people fly/float right up and find it difficult to stop doing that and get back down.

This was my experience at first as well. It took a few times before I was finally able to walk without lifting up in the air and floating around. Even still sometimes I will be walking and find myself unintentionally starting to fly/float around.

Perhaps Kaniaz is more or less on the right line.

I've found that the magic words in dreams are not "I want" but "I am". Don't think that you want to fly...convince yourself that you already have that power. Sometimes if I want something to happen I'll just close my eyes and focus on that thing happening. The I open them again, and usually it's happened. But if you are expecting something to be hard to do, then you haven't completely convinced yourself that you already have the power to do it. You have to have an almost religious faith in your ability to do it.

Sometimes it's easier to believe that someone else has the power. So conjure up a good friend of yours, if that helps, and convince yourself that they can give you the power. I've done it, and it worked for me.

Usually when I fly in my dreams it's like when superman flys I put one arm at my side and one in the air. I think another way to get an idea of flight would be to jump really high on a trampoline (sp)

When i fly in dreams i just do it... its as natural as visualizing it trough the day... i think its what i do when flying to... just kind of imagine me doing it while im doing it and i do it, but i feels like i do it with out the visualizing effort.. it just happens at my will

Or maybe your trying to hard? Just a thought but when you try to force it you force it because you think that you cant make it else. Try to do it as natural as when your visualizing it right now, and remember how you did it when visualizing.

I know there has been much insight shared on this topic but I'll tell you how I learned to do it anyways.

At first when I flew into the air the dream would blacken and details would fade, my thoughts woulde become blury and I would fall out of the dream/ lucidity. After much study and practice I learned that thoughtlessness is the key to all dream control, EVERYTHING. if you think you want to do somthing it automatically makes it hard to do, Once you reach lucidity leave the laws of reality behind, don't even give them a passing thought. Become part of the world not a member in the world and jump into the air, FLY! through walls through everything into the clouds; feel the wind against your face and the joy and freedom. It's as simple as that, don't think just do if you make your mind used to teh concept then it will allow you to do this without affecting the world around.

As I said in my introductory post, I often fly in my dreams, but have trouble controlling where I'm going -- one of the things I'd like to work on. Another thing that may or may not be interesting is that when I was younger, it seemed that the only times I could fly was if I was also naked. Of course, I have always liked being naked in my dreams, so that wasn't a problem.

      erm

when i cant just pull a "superman", i usually flap my arms like a bird. It usually works, but i only do it because i cant "Superman".

Another method that i tried was "stair stepping", you pretend that there's a flight of stairs in front of you and you just step up 'em, when your at the "top", just jump and i usually can fly after that.

LOL Vox, I've never heard that one before--that's original! I may have to try that just for the novelty value.

I noticed that (in my dreams at least) there was a certain weightless feeling that came whenever I successfully flew. After many unsuccessful attempts, I discovered that if I just ran and jumped, and then forced myself to feel that weightlessness, I would soar into the air. It's automatic now - I just run and jump, and can then fly as high or as far as I wish.
