Its a mind trick, much like the rest of controlling (or lack there of) lucid dreams.
Before you go to sleep sit in bed and close your eyes, relax your mind and imagine yourself in a dream, any dream you like. You are lucid in this dream and it is dark like it always is.
In your pretend dream say in your mind "light" and watch the light come into the dream, then say "dark" and watch the light fade, after you have practiced this for a while try doing the same thing with out voice commands.
The next time you have a lucid dream you will have a much greater ability to control your environment. If you practice this a lot before sleep, and see all your dreams in the day light, you will find that the majority of your lucid dreams will be bright.
Some psychologists may tell you that because lucid dreaming is a new skill to you that the darkness represents the unknown and your newness to the environment. Much like a baby that has yet learned to see.
Maybe this is correct, maybe its not, either way you do have the ability to control it, practice practice practice.
