      Can't run

Hey, sorry if it was posted somewhere else and feel free to link me to the right thread, but does anyone ever have a hard time running in their dream? It's not lucid dreams, just regular dreams. Whenever I try and run it's like I can't get my legs moving fast enough and can't coordinate the movement in my legs.

Just curious if it's common or not. If it's already posted, sorry, just show me where.

Actually, I'm pretty sure this is a fairly common problem that happens when people try to run in their dreams. it happens sometimes to me too - though I wouldn't know what it could mean...

In normal dreams I get "water legs" (just what I call them, it feels like I'm trying to run through water) all the time!

But when I'm lucid, I can run just fine.

Hmm it's strange that it would be common and it makes me curious why this seems to be more common then I thought.

That's actually a perfect way to describe how it feel. Just like you're trying to run through water up to your waist.

In non-LDs I tend to find myself running slowly, as if I were wading through water. I'd tell myself to 'speed up! Oh my god, why can't I run?'

In LDs, I find it easier to run. I've actually run off a building at full speed before.
We all live in a kind of continuous dream. When we wake, it is because something,
some event, some pinprick even, disturbs the edges of what we have taken as reality.

OMG I thought I was the only one this happened too! It's always in a dream like a horror movie where I'm trying to run away from a monster or killer and I try running but I can't. My legs are in slow motion. It's the wierdestt feeling lol

Being fully aware of the air whipping by you, controlling every movement of every single atom in your body with a single thought. It's real freedom, and there's not a word good enough to describe it, so I'll just call it dreamy for now."

Some people think it's something to do with sleep paralysis, I'm not completely sure what though. I think the act of running in the dream is a high energy motion and makes your body try to run but of course, you are in sleep paralysis and you cannot move your legs on your real body and this carries over into your dream but the dream is all in your mind so you CAN move but because you cannot with your real body it carries over a bit, making you go more slowly in a less strenous fashion.

Of course, that is just my own theory and may be wrong.

Oh and, yes, it is very common. Most people have that when they try to run in dreams and the feeling of being in water to your waist is a very accurate description of what it is like.

I do, it's an immediate dream sign for me, I become lucid almost 100% of the time when I'm having a hard time running. As a former NCAA runner, I have lots of running dreams too

Ooh, yeah I hate those lol.

Or I'll be dreaming about kicking a ball or punching something...I'll wake up a split second before my foot/hand hits a wall or something...Talk about a rude awakening. >.<

Sometimes it happens to me... Also, in one of my dreams, I dreamed I was hitting something with a bat and I just couldn't hit it hard enough it seemed... My brother called it determination to do the impossible...?

Yeah, it's very common... so common that you see it in movies all the time.

I totally agree with Dying Dignity... I've always thought I was actually trying to move my legs and couldn't, or maybe they were just twitching a little like a dog's paws when they're dreaming of running (ever seen this?). I used to frequently end up crawling, which worked a lot better. Maybe arms can move a little more because they're less heavy and/or less encumbered by blankets? Of course I didn't know about SP till recently, but like I said, I've seen my dog's paws twitching when she dreams, so I figure human legs do the same.

Anyway, when I'm crawling I usually just let my legs drift up in the air behind me and then I can go a lot faster... it's like crawl-sprinting. My hands actually grip the ground and I can move along at a pretty good clip!

And about the last 2 posts.... heh, I had a dream once that I was playing street hockey with Ozzy Osbourne, but we were using double-headed battle axes instead of hockey sticks, and using the head of an axe for a puck!! Every time he hit the 'puck' it whizzed past my head insanely fast and buried in the wall... I always had to wiggle it loose, then I'd drop it and hit it as hard as I could, and it would slide about two feet really slow and just stop. He'd laugh this demonic laugh and tap his axe on the street and it would suddenly jump to him super-fast. Real bummer of a dream (but still pretty cool.. ya know?)

I don't have problems running, but whenever I fight someone in a dream that happens to my arms. It feels like I'm trying to punch underwater and I can't will myself to actually move faster. Not the same, but similar.
