[20:20] <@puffin> So, hopefully you all know that lucid dreaming is basically being aware that you're dreaming. You don't need to be able to control your lucid dream, you just need the awareness to count that dream as a lucid.

[20:20] <@puffin> I get those a lot... don't usually become lucid though.
[20:20] <@puffin> If the lucid dream is only a second, or you don't get to do anything in it, it's still a lucid dream so you can add that to your LD count.

[20:21] <@puffin> I understand why; they're pretty stable.
[20:21] <Frozenwolf> I've had a few but not become lucid
[20:22] <CrimsonStorm> One of my only lucids was a false awakening. It was pretty cool.
[20:22] <@puffin> Recall is a really important part of DILD. I can vouch for this because today I had a nap, and I know I had two lucid dreams within it. But I could only remember one of them.
[20:23] <DawgBone> How do you improve recall, puffin?
[20:23] <@puffin> You can improve recall by taking vitamin B6 supplements, or drinking a glass of apple juice before bed.
[20:23] <Mette78> ah I can vouch for the apple juice! I think...

[20:24] <Mette78> had some real apple juice, not concentrate, a couple of months ago
[20:24] <Mette78> also omega 3, and I had up to 8 dreams two times
[20:24] <defqon1> ive realised that if i actually keep a dream journal, i recall a fair bit more than i thought
[20:25] <@puffin> Real apple juice works well. :D You can also improve your recall by attempting to remember as much as you can right when you wake up. Basically you keep a sheet of paper and a pen at your bedside, and when you wake up, lie still with your eyes closed (this isn't a DEILD though). Stay relaxed, breathing deeply, and try to remember as much as you can. Staying still for a while after awakening helps your brain stay in dream mode, provoking more recall.

[20:25] <@puffin> I'm not sure about apples themselves, but you could try.
[20:26] <@puffin> The next part of that recall technique is to, without moving, put your arm over the side of the bed and just jot stuff down on the paper, without looking at it.
[20:26] <@puffin> And that's basic recall improvement.
[20:26] <OtisMcRainbow> I tried that :/ but i had a FA where i wrote down everything :/

[20:27] <@puffin> Oh, I've done that before. Got up, brushed my teeth, ate toast... Woke up and did it all again, then woke up for real. I didn't feel like doing any of that again. :P
[20:27] <Mette78> haha I use to have those too! not real FAs but like, I think I'm writing them down, only to realise I'm only thinking about doing it

[20:27] <Frozenwolf> I never tried to write wihtout looking but whenever I wake up i think about my dreams then turn on my light and write them in my DJ

[20:28] <Mette78> why not just lie there for a few minutes until u cant remember any more
[20:28] <@puffin> The less you open your eyes and the more you relax, the more your body is relaxed, prompting recall. It's best to try recalling as much as you can before moving, yes :)
[20:29] <@puffin> But if you get so much recall in your head, you might forget some of it as you're writing it down. It's a tough line to draw sometimes.

[20:30] <defqon1> i record myself describing my dream and writ it down later
[20:30] <DawgBone> I do that too
[20:30] <@puffin> Recording is basically just writing everything you remember down. Personally, I sometimes jot down sentences, or just make jotnotes. I use the above technique every morning with the sheet of paper, and write everything down, in more detail, in my Dreamviews dream journal.
[20:30] <Mette78> is it best to strain the memory to try to recall, or just lie there?
[20:31] <OtisMcRainbow> i just write down basics, and anything i happen to remember on spot then go over it again later to see if i can get more out of it
[20:31] <@puffin> I suggest not straining to recall, because it stresses you out if you can't seem to recall anything; by then it totally kills your chances of recall. But it's different for each person.
[20:32] <@puffin> OtisMcRainbow is right, sometimes you can just write down a few sentences and then you'll remember all the other details during the day.
[20:32] <Mette78> what about when you can't remember more after just lying there?
[20:32] <@puffin> Sometimes that's all you can remember; in that case, write it down.
[20:33] <@puffin> Try thinking of keywords and asking yourself if you had a dream that occurred in your house, at college, school, or one that involved your friends or a character from TV. That might help, too

[20:35] <@puffin> Here's a quick question for you guys, everyone try to answer: what causes you to become lucid?

[20:36] <LucidAvenger> an awareness that you are dreaming?
[20:36] <Frozenwolf> Being aware that something in your dream can't be real
[20:36] <CrimsonStorm> Self-awareness, in particular.
[20:36] <OtisMcRainbow> the realization you are dreaming, or something is not real/possible
[20:36] <Mette78> I just know it's a dream spontaneously
[20:36] <Mette78> mostly because of something I see or experience
[20:37] <@puffin> Good, it's pretty much awareness. And Matte, most people do suddenly realize that they're dreaming. Something doesn't necessarily have to be wierd or strange in the dream in order for the person to become lucid.

[20:38] <@puffin> Sometimes you're slightly aware in the dream, and then you see a trigger like something that looks off, and then you become more aware.

[20:39] <@puffin> Ah, sorry about that. *facepalm* A dream sign's a cue that you're dreaming, like seeing a purple cat, being in your old school, etcetera.

[20:40] <@puffin> Dawgbone and Crimson are right, you need awareness to recognize dream signs in the first place. And if you already have awareness, you already have a chance at becoming lucid.
[20:40] <@puffin> Dream signs are unreliable, like LucidAvenger said. They don't always appear in your dreams.

[20:42] <CrimsonStorm> I like reality checks, not really as a way to make me lucid, but to be the last check once I'm reasonably sure I am.
[20:43] <@puffin> That sometimes happens to me too; it's good to just increase your general awareness so you're more conscious, and so you're more certain you're dreaming.

[20:43] <Mette78> yeah, doing a rc makes my dreams more stable and vivid
[20:43] <@puffin> Usually, RCs involve the sense of touch or sight, which helps stabilize the dream in general.
[20:44] <@puffin> Here's a list of RCs in case you don't know them all.
[20:44] <@puffin> Nose-plug RC - it basically involves plugging your nose and seeing if you can breathe through it. If you're dreaming, you'll be able to breathe through it like nothing's blocking it, and there won't be pressure like in real life.

[20:45] <@puffin> Finger counting RC - look at your hand(s) and count how many fingers you have. You might have more or less than five, or have tiny fingers branching off the existing ones!

[20:46] <Frozenwolf> I normally use the finger counting and nose plug
[20:46] <@puffin> Digital clock RC - look at a digital clock and note the time. Turn away, and then look back again. The time may have changed. Or, you know how digital times are made of those long rectangle thing? The first time you look at the time, a few of these rectangles might be missing, which looks rather creepy.
[20:47] <defqon1> the only time i really became lucid was after looking at a digital clock
[20:47] <@puffin> I use the nose-plug check 99% of the time, because it's easy to use and you don't need a bright environment for it to fail or succeed.
[20:47] <@puffin> You probably had pre-existing awareness that increased when you looked at the clock.
[20:47] <defqon1> Yeah i did indeed
[20:48] <@puffin> Reading RC - sometimes text will be upside-down, look strange, or just "off" in general. But then again, I've had numerous dreams where everything read out normally, and I even properly spelled something in a sandbox at one point. In my opinion this isn't as reliable a RC for some people

[20:48] <Mette78> yeah sometimes your brain tells you that a certain word is spelled like that
[20:49] <Mette78> totally messed up, just like the brain tells you seeing a flying elephant is normal, right?

[20:49] <CrimsonStorm> Yeah, I've tried a few, and I like the nose-plug one the best.
[20:49] <@puffin> Finger-through-palm RC - Hold your hand out, and try pushing the index finger of your other hand through it. If you're dreaming, it'll go through, which is a pretty cool experience. Although you might have to push a little to get it to go through.
[20:49] <Mette78> I haven't tried the noseplug one, only counted fingers and watched a clock, not digital though, but I knew I was dreaming
[20:49] <@puffin> The logic center of your brain is often turned off in dreams, which is why we take everything as "normal" in a dream.
[20:49] <CrimsonStorm> It's simple, reliable, and like you said, and be done anyone.

[20:50] <@puffin> Sometimes you don't even need to do a reality check; in this case, you're either not lucid enough to remember, or you're so lucid you know for a fact that you're dreaming.

[20:51] <@puffin> Location RC: Where are you right now, and can you recall how you got there? In a dream you can be somewhere with no memory of how you ended up there.

[20:52] <Frozenwolf> What about checking gravity? IT's often different in dreams.
[20:52] <Mette78> making the RCs aren't my problem, I need to make myself remember doing them more often
[20:52] <@puffin> Gravity works normally for me in dreams. I think it depends on the person.
[20:52] <Mette78> the more I go around and question the waking world, the bigger chance of me question the dream right?
[20:52] <Frozenwolf> Ok because I had a dream the other night where he gravity was different but I didn't realise int he dream
[20:53] <@puffin> Yes. :D Every few hours during the day, make yourself more aware than normal - look around, read a paragraph of text or a sign, and do a reality check.
[20:53] <@puffin> Since we don't question that we may be dreaming while we're in the dream itself, it's important to do this in real life, no matter how certain you may be that you're awake.
[20:53] <Mette78> can you overdo it?
[20:53] <@puffin> I don't think it's possible to overdo it, no.
[20:54] <Mette78> atm I do it like... 6 times every hour
[20:54] <@puffin> The more awareness, the better.
[20:54] <@puffin> And that's a good start.
[20:55] <Frozenwolf> I try to do it every hour but sometimes I forget while at school
[20:55] <@puffin> Questioning reality and raising awareness is probably the most important thing you need for DILD

[20:55] <Mette78> might be worth it when u finish it
[20:56] <Frozenwolf> Same, most of my dreams happen in school.
[20:56] <@puffin> It's hard to remember at first. You can write notes in your agenda or binder, and then raise your awareness when you read them. But be careful not to rely too much on cues or notes, because there's a good chance you might not have them in your dream.
[20:56] <@puffin> Dreams occurring in school alot is considered a dream sign, so don't RC only when you're in school. Generalize them.
[20:56] <CrimsonStorm> Yeah, a lot of mine do as well.

[21:02] <@puffin> You should only do reality checks to confirm that you're dreaming. Don't make raising your awareness and RCing become habit, that's death for DILDing! :P

[21:02] <CrimsonStorm> Or probably more importantly, be aware of yourself and your perceptions, and think about if you're truely awake. RC's just help test this.

[21:03] <@puffin> I had my first DILD within a week of joining DV. That sounds a bit fast compared to some other people, but the rate of learning's different for everyone.
[21:03] <@puffin> I sort of put an emphasis on awareness right away, as soon as I read the DILD tutorial, and maybe that's why I got an LD so fast. I used the same techniques I'm teaching you guys :)

[20:12] <@puffin> When you choose to question reality, ask yourself why you're doing what you're doing. See if you can feel your heartbeat.
[20:13] <@puffin> There's also a slightly different approach - you can meditate once or twice a day, in five minute periods... just relax, deepen your breathing, and see if you can hear what's going on around you. Being able to focus on external sounds while you're relaxed is a good way to guage both internal awareness, and external.

It pretty much involves looking around, as CrimsonStorm said, and seeing if you can remember how you got to where you are. Think about if it's really possible that you're at where you are. If you're dreaming, you may have no memory of how you got to a certain place.

[20:16] <@puffin> "can I remember how I got here?" - either yes or no.
[20:16] <@puffin> If yes, do another RC just to make sure. Really be skeptical because you won't be skeptical in a dream.
