Hey people , try checking out Frank Gambale and Allan Holdsworth , they play fusion type guitar which may sound a bit wierd to some people , but i really like it and its a good change from shred .

been teaching myself acoustic guitar for over a year now. when i get a little better i'll get an electric...

best guitarists? page, hendrix, petrucci are big three for me.

has anyone heard of the nashville guitar method? i just got it in the mail today, and its awesome! its one pattern that you can use to play virtually any scale (in major, minor, lydian, dorian, etc). it should shave off dozens, even hundreds of hours of tedious practice.

its made me so excited about guitar again. i've been getting a little bored not being able to do much more than strum chords...

http://www.nashvillepattern.com/

basically the pattern is 7 lines ("strings") in a row, with a number above each (1-7 from left to right) . each string has 3 finger placements.

line (string)one is- 1, 2, 4
two is -1, 2, 4
three- 1, 3, 4
f our- 1, 3, 4
five- 1, 3, 5
six- 1, 3, 5
seven- 1, 3, 5

the relation between these lines NEVER changes, only where you place the pattern on the fretboard (depending on what scale you want)

you pick out which root and type of scale you want (eg C major) and pick any C on the fretboard you want to start on. it tells you which 'string' (line from 1-7) to begin with, depending on which type of scale you want. major scales start on line 6, minor on line 3, dorian on line 4, lydian on line six, etc...

all major scales start on line 6 of the pattern. so lets say you want to start playing the C major scale on the A string (2nd string) of the guitar. that C is on the third fret. so that root C becomes the starting point "1" on line 6.

A string= line six-1, 3, 5,
D string= line seven- 1, 3, 5,
G string-= the pattern wraps around, so you go to line one- 1, 2, 4
B string-= 1, 2, 4,
and so on.

the only 2 times you alter the pattern at all are when you go from line 7 to line 1 (you move up one pitch, or fret), or from the G string to the B string (up one pitch).

its a little hard to explain better than that without the visual chart. but it only took me 10-15 minutes to fully understand how it works, and already i am busting out tons of different scales, whereas before i would struggle to learn a single one.

it suprisingly simple and easy once you get the hang of it. you don't even really need to know the notes on the guitar 8)

seriously, if any of you guitar players are trying to learn scales (which are the basic alphabet of all music) this is the best investment you will ever make. i'm fuckin amazed at how airtight the pattern is

My new guitar

Ya a new guitar.
That is what people do when they suck. They try and buy themselves skill.
But it is much better than my Johnson guitar. Seriously!

Me playing the guitar.

Is that a strat? Or a G and L? Either way looks nice!

Ahh, and by the way.
Been playing for about 7 years.
I am 14 years old.
Id say im pretty good for my age (and I hate to not sound modest).
I currently play anything from Satriani and John Petrucci to the beatles.
I use a range of guitars, a 1998 tobacco sunbirst strat.
Some old les paul copies.
But my favourite is my Ibanez top S series. I think its a 2001... Not sure. Love the low action on it. Ill get some pics on here in a while.

And yes, I can play mario chord style 8)

Ooooh a guitar topic!

I've been playing guitar now for over 6 years. I could be better if i had practised more in the past, but i've just been having fun. That's not to say i'm bad, because i think i'm quite good, just not as good as i could be. I use an Ibanez RG 370 MH, a Kustom Quad 100DFX and a Boss GT-8 Effects Processor. I play in a kind of a melodic death metal band, but we're heading more and more in the dark-prog direction. I've also very recently been influenced by John Zorn, and started writing crazy metal-jazz/funk-classical stuff.
I write chamber-esque classical as well, but that doesn't really fit in this topic.

Favourite guitarists?
Allan Holdsworth is unbelievable. So unique and so masterful at the same time. If i can muster half the improv skill Holdsworth has i'll be an extremely happy man.

Steve Vai is another great one. Again, he's unique and a master. A definite, and much welcomed Zappa influence in his writing. he's just plain old fun to listen to and watch. Beautiful stuff.

I also really enjoy what i've heard from Buckethead. He's whacky, and he can play pretty much any style of music with virtuosity. More importantly than that though, he knows how to write music that works and doesn't just contain a bunch of wank-fests.

It is a strat. It has a very dark metallic grey that changes colors with the light.
I am new to this. I am learning tab now.
As I improve I get more motivated though.
It is very advantageous to begin as young as you have. Since you are already good, you will really have capabilities.

Let's face it. How many of us will make this a profession. So if you are having fun, I think that is what counts the most.
I like also like the genre of music you do.

Absolutely, but it's not about developing skill to "make it" for me. It's just about developing skill so i can become a better guitarist. My goal in learning any instrument is to be able to express myself through that instrument. The better i get on a technical level, the more skill i have at my disposal to use as a translation for my expression. Until i've reached a certain level of skill i won't feel as though i'm an accomplished guitarist because i won't be able to use the instrument to anywhere near its full potential. Of course, as you said, fun is very important too. If playing guitar ever stops being fun for me, i will stop playing. But, considering my goals, i also have to be prepared to put the work in.

And you have good taste in music then

Indeed!
That is a good point you make.
Like any form of expression, art, speech, music or writing you have to become proficient at it to get your message across. Very well put!

Hey nice to see this topic again.

I just got some strings for the guitar today, I just put on some new ones yesterday, but when I was tuning I kind tuned one freaking octave to high, so the e-string snapped.

lol stupid ^__^

So I got some new ones.

Damn it's annoying to have a guitar that is missing a string : (

And putting new one's on them is annoying as hell too <=/ I don't like it. But my hands do make the strings dirrty, so I do have to every now and then..

Dude, take advantage of the missing string! Last year I snapped the G string (, no really, I DID!) and was too lazy to go out to get new strings. I ended up writing a couple songs from NOT having it!

Not having the string there allowed me to ignore it and come up with some fingerings that I'd never thought of before (or wasn't capable of pressing). I was able to see the guitar as a slightly different instrument all together. It also made me mess around with the tuning of the other strings. I think i got two songs out of it before I started to miss the having the string.

I heard that one once, lol

yeah, like when your guitar is Totally out of tune, something played on a single string still sounds good. Basicly you could play most songs on one string. I mean all the other strings are the same but just 2.5 (or 2) tones higher/lower.

But then, if you try to play a song and you need that string.. damn

No wonder I hadn't seen this thread, it's a necropost.

Anyways. I have an old (And to be honest, kinda crappy) Jackson. Everything about it is mediocre, except for the strings. Yeah.
I've been screwing around with it for a few years now, but I've been getting into guitar more lately. I'm trying to learn Wish You Were Here (Pink Floyd, duh) and Pinball Wizard. (The Who) I don't remember any songs from when I was taking lessons about a year ago, other than the James Bond theme.
Anyway. I've been thinking about saving up for another, but good ones are EXPENSIVE (And a David Gilmour signature Strat is going to be upwards of $1,500) and I still need to save up for a 360.

Yeah this old topic of mine is pretty DAMN necro... but hey, that kind of turns me on a little.

No, not really

But I do wonder or we still have guitarists around I am basicly gettin lazy at guitar, but still like to play. Only I just play improvised stuff, I never actually learn a song, or write one myself. I just Jam. Jams... hmmm.
