      Guitarists, Unite!

It surprised me there isn't a topic here dedicated only to the beautifull guitar!

      So I made one.

In this topic we guitarist talk about who has the biggest... err.. best guitar. Whats the best guitarist in the world. What are good band with guitars in them. How incredible your own guitar playing skills are. And talk about songs to play on the good old Mr. Guitar.

      Some stuff about me:
-I am playing guitar for about 1.5 years now, started when I was 15. To bad I didn't start sooner
-I have lessons once aweek. My guitar teacher is cool, nice fella so I enjoy the lessons and learn a bunch.
-I used to have a crappy 100$ guitar. Now I have a Squire (by Fender that is!). It rocks the box.. and my crappy amp aswell.
-Gest guitarist ever is Jimi hendrix. Steve vai and Joe satriani are great too... and less dead
-I like to improvise. Viva la pentatonic scale.

And so on and so on. Talk about stuff! I will posts some pics of my extremely cool guitar soon 8)

      Go guitarists, Go!

I'm going to get a guitar soon. I'm a big fan of bands like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest with cool guitar solo's and stuff.

As for the best guitarist ever, I've heard that Darrell "Dimebag" Abbott was the best ever, before he was shot on stage. . He was the guitarist for Pantera in case you didn't know. I've been told a few times by different people that Slash from Velvet Revolver is the best at the moment. Dave Murray from Iron Maiden is good too.

I used to play some, but it's been a long time since I picked up a guitar.

I have a 75 Les Paul standard that's in pretty bad shape. It needs re-finished.
I also have a rose colored Carvin that's shaped like a Gibson Explorer. Three pickups and 24 frets...I really like that axe.

Pagey is my favorite guitarist. After him would be Tony Iommi. I love the sound he got from that SG.

Pretty much...unless you ask Ritchie Blackmore. I read an interview in which he said he didn't like Les Pauls because they were too easy to play.

I listened to the Maiden in high school. Sometimes I miss Piece of mind and Powerslave.

Yeah, Pagey = Jimmy Page. Zep is the greatest rock band of all time and Led Zep IV is the greatest rock album of all time.

I have a guitar but it's missing a few strings, I've tried to play several times but I suck , I just don't understand chords, and stuff.

I'd rather sing, I've been singing since I was 14 (2 years almost) so ya I wish I would have started sooner, I always sing everyday , I never get tired of it like the guitar, maybe becouse I so bad at it, and singing is so easy.

I too have an intructer, in my chanber singers class.

Damn, I am so surprised that nobody mentioned Michael Hedges. He is the best guitar player, ever. Steve Vai, when asked about what musician influenced his playing the most, said that Michael Hedges did. Give him a listen. It's well worth it.

      yeeeehaaaa!
I am currently learning the guitar & tablature. I love it. I have soooo much to learn!
However my biased opinion on who the best guitarists are in order are:
Jimmy Hendrix > Not my favorite, but I have to give credit where credit is due.
Jimmy Page> You name it, electric, acoustic. slide heavy, slow, he's got it down.
Jerry Cantrell> under rated. Such elaborate compositions and clean. Wow!
      Three J's, interesting.
Steve Rai and Joe satriani > I can't help but include them.

      - Started playing when I was 13, so its been, 8 years(wow time flys)
      - Had a band when I was like 14-16, played mostly heavy, trash, some megadeth and metallica covers(old songs)
      - I studied music composition, so now I just dedicate more to that, but I did compose all off the bands songs!!!(those lazy bastards )
      - Favorite guitarrist, now I'm into classical, so I'd say Silvio Rodríguez, but the most skilled one I've seen is Yngwie Malmsteen(or something like that, what a name ) He played mostly arppegio solos, extremly fast, and mixes some classical into it, plus there is nothing I've seen he can't do; another one I like is Eddie Van Halen,He just kicks ass, he inveted tapping, plus the 1984 album, it's the greatests, "Hot for the teacher" love that song . And well spanish guitarrist are amazingly good, like Paco de Lucia amongst others Flamenco!!!!
      Here and there...

I started when I was twelve. I found an old, old 1956 Silvertone Guitar in a abandoned house, which sparked my interest in Playing. After messing around with it I decided to get serious and got a Washburn guitar for Christmas around 13 years old. I have a band also....kidna. We need a Singer. I play Hard Rock, metal, Thrash, stuff like Metallica, Pantera, STP, System of a Down. Favorite Gutiarists are "Whats-his-name" from Metallica, Dimebag Darrel, or Slash.

My favourite guitarist ATM is probably Steve Vai , and has been for quite some time . Other guitarists i like are Jason Becker , Shawn Lane , Rusty Cooley , Satch , Yngwie , Joe Petrucci , Eric Johnson , Buckethead , Guthrie Govan , MAB , Billy Sheehan . Not to mention the music that made me pay sit up and take notice of the guitar in the beggining , like Metallica and Pantera . Primarily though im into guirarists with a good technical grasp of the guitar and a real musical melodic sound . I went through the shred phase and thanks to shred i got to hear players like Shawn Lane , Jason Becker and Vai . Then theres the Powerhouses of shred like Rusty and MAB , im especially looking forwards to Outworld .

So yeah , guitar RULES !!

Hmm, never heard of him. But I will see or I can find something of him to listen to 8)

And about Yngie Malmsteen... what a fat fuck he looks funny^__^ He's a great guitarist, but I do not like his style as much.

Nice to see there are enough of fellow DVers that love or play the guitar! =)

Hmm I've been teaching myself for about two years now, just love playing guitar as something to keep me occupied... there was one stage when I was right into it, playing contantly but now i'm spending more time on ym writing.

I'm not really a fan of any rock more recent than the Clapton/Page/Hendrix era... I'm more a fan of old blues music anyway. While some blues stuff is quite technically simple, when you hear the way people like Robert Johnson and Son House etc play it you'll be amazed. Son House has an awesome percussive violent way of singing songs, wheras Skip James on the other hand does delicate lightning fast fingerpicking... depends on the artist themselves I guess.

      yeah, guitarist and drummer here.

      my rig is as follows:

25th anniversary american series fender stratocaster (olympic white/maple fretboard)
      kinman avn series pickups
fender hot rod deluxe tube amplifier
      jj preamp tubes
      sed power tubes
      celestion vintage 30 speaker
      visual sound route 66 overdrive/compression
electro harmonix big muff pi nyc reissue fuzz pedal
      electro harmonix small clone chorus

Whoever said about les pauls being the best guitars in the world or whatever, it's a lot harder to say than that. Historically, yes, the most popular guitars in the world are Stratocasters, Telecasters, and Les Pauls. BUT: there's a few things to note. Firstly, any true guitarist will tell you that a new Les Paul is nothing compared to a vintage one. Just check Ebay to see how much vintage guitars go for. Companies like to make money, and most of the quality went out the window on these guitars. Secondly, if you're just starting out, you shouldn't get a "REAL" Les Paul. IE. A Gibson. That will set you back almost $2000. You don't need that if you're starting out, just get an Epiphone Les Paul.

In my glorious opinion, the most underrated guitarist of the last 15 years is Larry Lalonde from Primus. He's got the most unique and original scales I've ever heard.

A popular misconception. While he did popularize tapping during the 80's with his extended tapping runs in "Eruption," guitarists such as Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top were using less flashy forms of tapping long before Eddie. He is a really great guitar player, though.

Anyway, so I obviously play a little guitar myself, lol. Jimmy Page from Led Zep is my all-time favorite, with two runners-up being David Gilmour from Pink Floyd and Jimi Hendrix. I don't really dig those shredder-type guys. My favorite under-rated guitarist is John Frusciante from the Red Hot Chili Peppers. You'd be surprised how fucking good he really is!

And Gibsons are nice (I personally own a Les Paul), but have you ever played a PRS? WOW!

Good call. I've been a fan since Seas of Cheese.

Adam Jones from TOOL needs to be mentioned.

lol, are you serious? Strats, man! He was left handed, so he would always turn his right handed guitars around backwards and string them upside down.

Actually, he was ambidextrous (he wrote with his right hand, for example), but he played guitar left handed for whatever reason.
