      Starcraft
Heroes of Might and Magic III
Warcraft III (unlimited fun thanks to the custom maps)
      Age of Empires II
      Age of Mythology
      Unreal Tournament (instagib ftw)

A great offline game was Fahrenheit (known as indigo prophecy in the usa).

Principally replayability. If you exit, it saves your character and you can continue where you left off. But if you die, that's it. It deletes all your saves and your character is no more than a record sheet and a high score. It imbues the game with a deep vein of tension and strategy that is unique to games of this type. And with a vast, vast array of diverse and fun character builds available, random levels, and deep game mechanics, trying to outdo your last (dead) character is just as fun as winning the game (which is very hard to do). For a game to manage making losing fun is testament to its quality. I'm a big fan of it and I have no shame in saying I have never won it (nor come remotely near), despite hundreds of hours involved in it.

The graphics are, well, non-existent, the story is, well, non-existent and the sound, well... you get the idea. But the game is seriously fun.

      Half-life series
Starcraft broodwar had me addicted for many years, then my mom took it away and I earned it back but she lost it.

Everything works out in the end, sometimes even badly.

I'm surprised so few people mentioned The Witcher. Great open-ended RPG. Has the NWN2 engine, KOTOR decision making, excellent graphics, adult themes (rare in RPGs, its a sigh of relief), and badass characters based on a novel. [The main being in my avatar].

Otherwise most of the games people mentioned I agree with. Also look up Crysis, but it requires a top of the line PC to run because the graphics are so damn phenomenal.

And you can add up Psychonauts to that list too ('nother pearl from Tim Schafer)

      Psychonauts!

Can't believe I forgot that. Theres so much creativity and little hidden additions to the game that it makes the experience so rewarding.

      Command & Conquer FTW.

I've played a lot of C&C games, but my favorite one is Red Alert 2: Yuri's Revenge.

I haven't played any games that are not like 4-years old, because they usually require expensive graphics cards, processors, and tons of RAM.

Practically every game released by BioWare
      Morrowind
      Oblivion
      Half life 2 + episode 1 & 2
      Team fortress 2!
Red Orchestra. Still one of the best online WWII shooters out there.

The games I've played in the last six months and have enjoyed a bit-

      Starcraft and the Expansion
; Played through the campaign again after a few years off it and enjoyed it, it was my first computer game ever so its nice to pick it up every now and then.

      Warcraft III and Expansion
; The Human campaign in the original game was the best out of all of them, but over all it was a really fun single player. I stopped playing it after I finished off the single player though

      Diablo II Expansion/Online
; I played this for about a month and a half, only long enough to build myself up until I had completed what has basically become the goal of that game; get rich. Had two hammerdins and an orb sorc that did 1k, not fully geared. So I gave my hdin gear to a friend and left it.

      Command and Conquer: Generals
; I am told this is the least liked of all the C&C games, but I think it's a fantastic game. I never played it online due to the computer specs I had at the time, but it was a fun single player. I really like the GTA.

Counter-Strike; Classic FPS and the only one that keeps my attention. I've got source loaded up now, but have yet to try it out due to disinterest.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas; This is what I'm playing currently and I am enjoying it. It's a pretty good pass time and I like the amount of customization allowed within the game as well as the storyline so far. I'll likely pick up CS: source or Day of Defeat: source after I complete this game, because while it obviously has re-playability you can only go on rampages for so long before it gets boring.

Those are the games I've played in the last six months and I enjoyed each of them, but if you can't tell I normally drop them pretty quickly.

I bought it last this year and I was thoroughly disappointed with it.

Mount&Blade rocks my body. I still think it's revolutionary. And you can get it for free.
Oh wow, I loved Age of Mythology. One of my favorite games.

At the moment, I say Guild Wars FTW!

      In the past it's been

Warcraft 3 - if people only played the single player part they REALLY missed out - custom online maps played multiplayer made the game for me. Wintermaul Tower Defense.... Line Tower Wars.... Good times

Thief 3 - Awesome concept, but the sound is so horribly generic, and not enough interesting places.

Age of Empires 2 - This was the game of my childhood, I never got bored of it Still I only played a couple of hours a week.
