      Coraline

I read this book by Neil Gaiman a few years ago and only just now found out they're making a movie version!! Ooooooh I am excited.

To be honest I wouldn't be too excited if I hadn't read the book and seen just the trailer alone... But yeah, there ya have it.

Niel Gaiman is one of my favorite authors of all time. I didn't know he wrote this book though.

Fragile Things (great, great short stories)
Smoke And Mirrors (also great short stories, but the second half wasn't as good)
NeverWhere (really a fun read, and new and fresh ideas)
Anansi Boys (a bit over the edge, but awsome, but I couldn't get through the first book (American Gods))...but they really seem like two very different peices of literature.

Is Coraline a childrens book? The movie looks really cool.

This looks quite creepy, though I'm sure I'll still watch it. Those buttons eyes, man...those are awesome.

Yeah, I've been waiting for this movie for a while. I, too have a man-crush on Neil Gaiman.

I can't wait! And you forgot to mention, It's in 3-D!

OOH! I didn't know that. That is coooooooool.

3D made Beowulf enjoyable for me despite the utter suckiness of everything else about the movie.

Good book. I recently read the graphic novel adaptation Neil Gaiman did, and I'm hoping the movie will be good. It seems like it's going to be, but I'm worried about how watching the cartoony style of animation for two hours will affect the mood (it may make it creepier, but certain things, like the ghosts, just cross the line into silly).

Yeah, the animation does look a little silly. From the preview I saw last year, I thought it would be darker and creepier.

I think I saw that 3D preview when I went to see Beowulf in 3D. I agree Beowulf was pretty sucky. Did you know that was also written by Neil Gaiman?

If Gaiman made of movie of some of his short stories, it would win a "Best Movie of The Year Award". The vision behind most of "Fragile Things" is just too damn good to go wrong.

Well Beowulf is a really ancient novel written like.. I don't even know.. thousands of years ago. You mean Gaiman was the director or something like that? Huh. I didn't know he was involved.

Life must be good being Gaiman right now. His books are being made into movies left and right.

      Beowulf was originally sung, actually.

But I have a question, what is so creepy about sewing buttons to your eyes? It doesn't seem like I'd get nightmares from reading this book, even as a child.

      ^^ Ahh yes you're right.

Anyhoo the way the buttons are described in the book make them pretty creepy. I vaguely recall him describing the clicking sound of the mother's fingernail as she taps the buttons.

It really is an enjoyable read.

Yeah, he wrote the screenplay with Roger Avary. Obviously he didn't come up with the original

When I heard he was working on the screenplay a couple years ago, I was hoping he would take a more interpretive slant on it. Like his short story Bay Wolf, if you've ever read that. A werewolf version set in a futuristic world of Bay Watch. That is the kind of stuff I like from him. Mixing different mythologies and cultural references in a clever and humorous way.

      I just saw this today.

It was amazing. And if you don't mind me saying, it was nothing short of a Lucid Dream. (Which is all this movie made me think about.) The 3D made it even better. And it was the Real-D instead of the old fashion red and blue lens 3D. Much better and it won't give you a headache. The visuals were great. And the music is wonderful. The 3D enhances it not in the aspect of making things pop out at you, but in the aspect of making you feel immersed in the whole film. It honestly wouldn't be as good without the 3D. It would still be great, don't get me wrong, but it just wouldn't feel right.

I'm going to have to find the book.

yeah, trailer alone wouldn't have gotten me excited, but I read the book and LOVED it, even though it was really short. The book did a great job of giving it a really eerie and mysterious atmosphere. Haven't seen the movie yet, but this is exactly why I hoped Tim Burton would have nothing to do with it. As the producer, I KNEW he would make it all cute, even if there were some creepy elements to it. I'm just disappointed that it's in this kind of animation, but hopefully I'll be pleasantly surprised. I'm just glad I read the book before even the trailer came out, cause I have a feeling it would have completely changed my perception of the story.
