In layman's terms, the Higg's Boson is the particle which, if it is found to exist, will prove pretty soundly that our current model of subatomic particles and forces is correct. Therefore there's a lot at astake.

I would go into more technical detail if I could, but unfortunately I'm just a layman too.

There is a show coming on Discovery Channel, right now, (Called "Mega Builders") and they're going to be talking about the LHC.

Considering I put Ouroboros in my signature a week or two before this came out... The synchronicity with this was pretty staggering. Nice to know I'm on the pulse...

well I cant wait for the LHC experiment, and frankly if the experts dont see a issue with its operation then what risk is there? I mean what could the less informed know that the experts dont, it seems silly that people keep coming out with this doomsday crap all it does is stand in the way of scientific progress.

Any black holes which are created will be tiny less then the size of an atom and they are only destructive within a certain radius with is surprisingly small and lies withing the range of or just beyond the event horizon. Not to mention the fact that they will degrade almost instantly

More importantly any black holes created will be proof of super string theory and ultimately may lead to discoveries in M Theory which is just spectacular. Just think if LHC works we may have a theory of Everything and be able to explain were the universe came from frankly I think it is worth the tiny risk they are taking

Not sure, really. I just happened to be flicking through the channels and caught it.

They didn't really talk too much about the concept of the LHC, though, just focused more on the construction of it.

I'm not sure if this has been posted before, but collisions of the energies that the LHC is capable of have be occurring for millions of years in our atmosphere.

Science is reaching for the godhead.

I say, go for the gold. For many we'd have to bite our own tail to realize the limitless potential within.

question though, if this god particle exists, and it is the reason everything has mass...what exactly gives it this property? even smaller particles?

I believe the Higgs mechansim does that.

The discombobulated pharson of the quelec field activated whilst it does a phallic twist with a bollust, is ultimately what I believe they'll find holds it all together...

ok, it makes sense except for one thing...how can the particles exist in the first place without mass...

it says this new particle could give the other ones mass but how could they even be there while still being massless?

Hehe. I love science, but every now and then I wonder if the scientists just make it up as they go...

Scientist: We are going to crash these two thingy-ma-jiggys together really fast and ...uh... observe the glorbinflorbin that comes out which make up the mass of them. Yeah, That's it...glorbinflorbin

Interviewer: What holds together this, glorbinflorbin?

Scientist: Well... uh... it's a mixture of things really; sorphindaphadil A, sorphindaphadil B, and a few others which... uh... let's face it, are too complicated for you to pronounce, remember, or understand, anyway. Oh, and, let's not forget the infamous... discombobulated pharson, which we think is activated of the quelec field whilst it does a phallic twist with a bollust.

      Interviewer: The wha?

Scientist: Pshh... It's the thing that holds it all together, duh!!

Interviewer: I thought you said the glorbinflorbin did that?

Scientist: It does, but this is an even smaller field we didn't know about before. Although, I'm sure once we name this particle we'll finally have all the answers to life figured out, because we all know how endlessly naming and labeling things is what really gives us knowledge...

The Higgs boson is suppose to give mass to all particles including itself.

I understand this part...but how can those other particles exist without mass in the first place? do they just spontaneously appear?

It may be useful to look into quantum mechanics, string theory and M theory mate because although things like particles are represented as points of solid matter they are not actually like that.

they dont exist as particles until they are measured or observed in fact the particles are every were at the same time like a wave. But it gets even stranger because string theory says that in fact the particles are not even particles but the effect on our space time of these strings of energy.

String theory and M theory also says that there are 11 dimensions in total and the particles like the higgs boson and the graviton are not tied onto our 3 dimensional world like normal particles but are part of the other higher dimensions which is why they are so hard to find. So they are there just not visible to us.

Thats one of the points of the experiment because to smash the atoms together at such speeds may be enough to force them into view before they disappear into the higher dimensions.

like I say its probably best to look into these things yourself im not to good at describing these things

hmm, quite interesting indeed. if such theories prove to be true and we learn to harness them, some paranormal things may become explainable. I will look in to these things myself though, thanks for the intro!

well the LHC is 7 times more powerful then any current particle accelerator I think there is only a tiny chance that this will not provide some kind of benefit

ok the world just is not going to end in 2012 nor will it be at the hand of the LHC, if there was any real risk to human life CERN would not proceed with the experiment.

People going round saying its the end of the world clearly dont grasp what they are talking about its as simple as that.
