Bush set the stage for martial law, and now we're going to be getting it with his successor.
The patriot act doesn't nullify posse comitatus. It severely loosened the restrictions on when martial law can be initiated, but martial law was not in effect in pittsburgh, and so the national guard doing policing action there is very very illegal. Even the news thinks nothing of it though, so laws are essentially meaningless in this country as they apply to the government.
Xei, I don't know about in the U.K., but in this country the military is not supposed to be used against its own citizens except in extremely dire situations and there are provisions for those in the insurrection act of 1807. The fact that the media and our government is so nonchalant about this blatant violation of U.S. law shows that they have lost all pretext of respect for the common citizens.
