for future reference, a heating pad on medium with a thin piece of cloth laid on it, then lay on the side that the ear is on and lay with the ear directly on the heating pad but don't let it create the "suction" effect. so kind of keep your head tilted. it'll get hot, and hurt take small breaks, this should steadily melt the wax out of your ear.

I have tested it in the said situation but i've melted wax with a heating pad before.... worth a shot.

I would never stick wax in my ear. No matter how I look at it, this just does not seem like a reasonable solution for any situation. It would be like using a tampon without a string. Haven't you ever witnessed what happens when a cat gets their toy stuck under the fridge? The harder you try to reach it, the further it gets pushed in.

You could be liable if he tries this the next time he's looking for earplugs.

      Okay okay, it was stupid.

And, actually, I never said I was using it as an earplug. I said it could be used as one. In my case, I was just being a general idiot.

I would lock this thread, but perhaps it can be a shining example to the community of what happens when you have too much time on your hands.

Well yeah Nina, I see what you're saying, but as long as part of the toy is bigger than the space under the fridge...

Chuckling about Tampon without a string...

Ok, I know I've heard of wax earplugs, but this thread was bugging me a bit, so I decided to do what anyone in the same situation would do. I googled.

There are all kinds of wax earplugs available. Amazon sells several. Here's a comment from one:

"They work great, because they can shape nicely to YOUR ear. You cannot just put them in your ear as they are, you got to mold them a little bit, so they loosen up, and then you stick them in there. They don't cause me that funny pressure in my head as other earplugs do. They don't have the same tendency to expend, cause they are not made of foam, so they don't hurt my ears either. They are greasy and mold and stick in like putty, and are easy to take out."

And yes, I can see where the idea of putting a ball of wax in your ear is scary to a lot of people... but I think the idea is that you leave the plugs big, so they just sit in the outer ear area, and can't fit down inside. I believe there was a saying, also from my grandpa's day - "Never stick anything smaller than your elbow inside your ear".

... And yeah, ok - I get it. Noogah apparently didn't know this saying. Or he screwed up and made it too small. Whatever. It was a mistake, and I think he learned from it.

I can understand saying "Wow, dude, that's not the way you're supposed to do it...", but I don't get the point of 12 people all ganging up and calling him stupid. That's just bullying. We all do dumb things... especially at his age. It's part of the learning process of becoming an adult.

"That was a stupid thing to do" - ok. Yeah, it was. But "You're stupid"... that's just mean. Especially after a few people have already said it... why do more need to pile on the bandwagon?

Argh! I thought it was pretty much gone, but I guess it was just...I dunno...temporarily settled. it's starting to bug me again.

Well Noogah, now you can rest secure in the knowledge that indeed wax has been used for earplugs for many decades (if not centuries), and in fact is better than many other materials because as you said you can make it fit your own ear perfectly.

So everybody who said it was stupid was just... well being stupid. As well as mean.

HA, just caught this thread. so funny.

anyway if it makes you feel any better Noogah, I did something stupid once ear-related. I think I was 12 or 13, I was popping those plastic bubbles on bubble wrap - you know, the ones that are irresistible to pop? they were the larger ones, size of quarters? anyway...something possessed me (still do not understand to this day) to pop one RIGHT in my ear.

next thing all I could hear in that ear was loud ringing, I was scared shitless, thought I was going to be deaf in that ear forever. ugghhh. why the HELL did I even do that??

Reminds me of the time me and a friend had a bunch of firecrackers left over from the 4th of July and we decided to hang one from a string down inside a sewer grate. It never went off, so like an idiot I looked down there, and right then it exploded. I couldn't hear for like an hour.

Among my people, Darkmatters, it's a given that all acts of stupidity will be exploited for full humor value, and if you can't take it, you'll live a short, stressful life. But it's okay that you did something culturally insensitive (am I doin it rite?)

Also, noogah already revealed that he was not trying to plug his ears, which makes one wonder just what esoteric ritual or handicraft went awry here...

No. I already told you, I was being dumb.

There was no intelligent or thoughtful process that went into it.

      Let me try again.

I had no reason to do it.

      Does this answer your question?

It felt weird. It didn't feel good, it felt weird.

Also, I suppose it's somewhat interesting to see a sculpture of your ear canal in candle wax.

      Don't.

I wasn't lying that people do use candle wax as ear plugs. It's true. Perhaps not so much anymore, but at one time, it was more prominent than now.

Ear candling. Its a hollow wax stick you put in your ear. You light it then it pulls earwax up through the tube. Might work for candle wax.

This is an old folk myth. Ear candles do not do anything. The wax that is left in the ear candle after you are done is just the wax that the actual ear candle is made out of. I speak from experience and research.
