Well, I think that the idea that dream characters are always other people is pretty bogus, considering lucid dreaming would be amazing if the dc of your friend was actually your friend all the time. Not that I think shared dreaming as a whole should be discounted, but that I run into family and friends all the time and they never have any recollection of it, even my wife, who I have woken and asked about what she is dreaming about. And also she has woken me before with a dream about me while I have my own awesome fantastic dreams.
So basically, if every DC was actually a human, it would be more like someone taking over someone else's dreams for a night. Does that make sense? Like I had a dream last night that I am surviving the zombie apocalypse with my wife. My wife has a dream about sunshine and roses. Random person #3 has a dream that they are a girl (my wife) surviving the zombie apocalypse with her husband (me). But that doesn't make much sense, considering the amount of people sleeping and crossover and things like that. So for instance if this was true in your case and salad fingers (love salad fingers... and rusty spoons) was a different human dreaming, they would be dreaming that they are salad fingers.
My idea is that they are just projections from our brain. For instance, salad fingers would just be a random thought floating in your unconscious mind, it comes to the top and manifests itself in the dream. Things like incubation can bring specific things, places, and people to your dream. Being lucid, you can go or summon any of those random thoughts. I have seen a lot of animated characters in dreams due to watching a lot of animated shows and anime. Finn and jake being semi regulars in the dreams. For about 6 months, I spent every lucid trying to get to aincrad from sword art online, so I have been there probably 40 times altogether. It is animated and coming from the low amount of frames in a japanese anime to real time dream is really interesting to see.
