So....I was just thinking: how about the creation of a video game (with really beautiful graphics) where basically you are dreaming and can do whatever you want? This would implicate an infinite game (randomly created quests...) where you would gain in vividness and control.... |

Sounds like fun. The only problem I foresee with it is that what happens when a person wants to try somethning the game hasn't been programed for? Also, games without a point get kind of anoying after a while, and it sounds a bit like Second Life, where you can do anything, if you know how, make anything, and there is no real goal (which I don't play anymore as I don't like being addicted to online games). It sounds like a good idea, but the problem is that if it worked it would also be way too addictive as you can do whatever you want. It sounds like fun, but I don't think it is an idea that would pay off to do. |

whts 2nd life? |

A free (assuming you're not stupid enough to go buy land etc.) MMORPG online game thing where you just wander around this huge world and using ingame building tools can create literally anything if you're good enough (vehicles, buildings, etc.). It is kind of like a shared dream world in a way in that you can do anything, except it takes your real time, and to get the good stuff there, it costs money. I got bored of it after about a week as it was wasting my time, and I realized there is absolutely no point to what I'm doing and it will get me nothing and nowhere. |
ill try it. it cost money? |
Well, one feature the game would have is that you could create yourself abilities (you would be like a second programmer of the game, if that's possible)... |

It's weird you mention this. Beacuse I've always thought of being able to control your dreams would be like a second world. You live in one world then when you go to bed you have another world that you get to do what ever you want in. |
I've seen it. Yeah it's good. |

Your dream game reminds me of the PS2 game "Psychonauts ". In it, you play levels that take place in the mind. Very much a dream world indeed. |
It'd be wicked if there was a game like this: You'd start off in a white void, and you'd create your character there. You could assign skills to certain buttons (or keys if it was for the PC) that'd let you activate certain powers, like throwing fireballs, warping, activating telekinesis, ect. Then, you'd be able to enter levels (like a city street, for example) and run around doing whatever you want. The people would react to what you do (like run away, or watch in awe), and it'd make you feel godly. In addition, you'd be able to make your own levels and then mess them up as well. |

A game like that doesn't have to be pointless. a good storyline can be wrapped around just about any novel idea, if a talented author is found. It would be really awesome, too; especially if a suficiently dynamic abiliy creation scheme could be devised. You could level up things like vividity, control, belief and stuff, and even find your dream guide or something. |
cool |
That way wouuld actually be really fun. If a great author could be found that would make a storyline that gives the game a point without tying you down to a certain way of things happening in a certain order, so it would still be a lot from your immagination, and you could create stuff/abilities, but not in an unfair way that would make you win automatically (like you need to level up to give stuff certain powers/abilities), that would be amazingly good. I think a game that is non-binding, but purpose-giving storyline combined with no fees for stuff past buying the game at most, and with the tools to make your immagination truly the limit would do extremely well. |
The closest thing I can imagine to this idea is the Nintendo's Electroplankton. |
Hey, I meant to get that game! But I left america. Oh well. The hardest part in the game would be to mix the real and dreaming worlds convincingly, and with a fair bit of science in there. I was thinking that the ability creation thingy might be something like this; First, you have to specify what it affects. this would be something like you/target/area/all, then you would chose a "form" for it; I..e. Ball (as in fireball,) bolt, (as in lightening,) etc; four or five forms. these would affect how it affects things. Then you would chose one or more elements for it, like fire, slow, mute, blind, etc. the hardest part would be to make these abilitys deep. That is, make them convincingly have a huge range of thoughtfull effects. Like mute could be used on people to stop them from being able to talk, if you thought they were annoying, but also to let you sneak easier. Stuff like that. A game like that would really have to be imaginative to make it big. |

Add in an ECG/EEG machine for a second controller. Now you've got a dream video game with style and flexibility. |
Sorry, how can you use an ECG/EEG machine for a video game? I didn't really get it... |

It was meant somewhat tongue-in-cheek. Those machine are used to monitor brain waves/activity. They are used - along with the detection of eye movements - in the study of sleep and dreams. Or, in our context, the study of lucid dreaming and tells the researcher when the subject has entered REM and other stages of sleep. |
That's what programmers do, right? They make whatever game they want! Because the program could never be vast enough to have what everyone imagines, I assume that the person playing this videogame must be the programmer, too! |
