Because we sleep right through them and aren't normally trying to remember anything. You wake up and suddenly the brain is flooded with input, quickly crowding out what was only in short term memory (your dream).

      Pretty much a perfect explination.

Most people don't pay attention to there dreams so they don't remember them. And by the time 14+ your dream recall is so down the toilet it takes work to get it back up.

I was always a dreamer, in childhood especially. People thought I was a little strange.-Charley pride

My dream recall has been horrendous lately. I haven't remembered a long dream in a week or two. It just takes a lot of practice and even then it can come and go in cycles (at least for me).

I remember a time when I had absolutely no recall and thus believed I didn't dream at all. Lack of recall can be do to many things- stress, beliefs about recall, etc. Generally, it has to do with your state of mind. Do you believe you can recall your dreams that you certainly have every night and whether or not your mind is clear when you wake up are two factors that I feel are important.
