      Totems are fictional and not actually used in lucid deaming. The purpose of totems in inception is to check who's dream you are in. But because shared dreaming machines, inception, and extraction don't exist there is no need for totems.

      Though RCs (reality checks) are similar to totems in the sense that they help you check reality. There are many of those, and I personally use the "nose pinch RC" more than any other.
