Question Is lucid dreaming an art? [Discussion]

"The expression or application of human creative skill and imagination..."

Do you think lucid dreaming can be classed as an art? I figured it'd make for an interesting discussion...so yeah, discuss.

I personally would say it is because with lucid dreaming, you're using your mind + imagination to create. These are the same creative principles behind more traditional forms of art such as music and painting so why not?

Art is very subjective, obviously. I personally don't think of my dreams as art, just like I don't of the images created by imagination to be art. It's not something tangible that I can show to other people, or express. I think of it as a fun experience.

That depends. A paintbrush is not art. A piano is not art. They are mediums through which artistic expression can take place. I think of lucid dreaming in the same way. To me art does not have to be directly observable by others.

If you speak strictly in terms of the definition given above, then yes.

It all depends on the situation, of course. I would consider a more complex sort of dream scenario, with some sort of worked out plot or backstory, to be a sort of improv cinema, and films are a form of art (or, at least good ones )

It's formless creativity in your mind in dreams but it's art once you give it form based on what you think it represents artistically and then transfer the impression onto some media like a painting. But this art only has meaning to you the dreamer.

Not necessarily, but it is potentially the best medium, since you can limitlessly create scenes, pictures, stories, experiences.... although it may be difficult or even impossible (depending on the "art" in question) to transfer to waking life.

What art isn't a skill? Some more than others, but music, painting, sculpture, film... They are all things that I think most of us would consider to be both a "skill" and an "art". Really it just depends on definition. Lucid dreaming is a medium for creative expression.

The major difference between lucid dreaming and the more obvious arts is that art made on the canvas of lucid dreaming cannot be shown to others (with todays technology). In my opinion that is not a prerequisite to art.

Well, considering people share their dreams through journals, it can be considered an art, unless you suck at writting like me, then no, not right now. But it is a great tool for art.
