I believe its both, or neither.
As a few people have said, the real answer might be too much for us to put into words, and external/internal labels might just be a way of speaking about something nearly impossible to describe from our flatland perspective. I think the radio analogy posted by Aaeull might me closer to the truth. In that case it's neither external or internal, just alongside.
OK I personally would say mostly internal but as far as the OBE thing i am a little unsure as in the SAS etc men are trained to sit in a room and travel to spy on others, this has been accounted for ,therefor it actually happens and it is also a very used and proven technique they use to spy on the enemy or so. So with this knowledge in hand, i would say external aswell as internal...i think it can swing both ways but thats just my personal opinion
The existence of remote viewing, remote influencing etc show us that it's not easy to write off dream experiences as personal imagination and nothing more.
But are these remote viewers going inside to get the information, or do they start off inside and then go outside? Who knows.

The main reason I started this thread was I needed to know where to focus my awareness in LD attempts. Inside or outside? It makes sense to focus on the infinity inside than wriggle around trying to 'project' before I'm ready.
I believe that most people have yet to discover the potential of the human mind, especially when it comes to astral projection, OBE, lucidity and the like. The basic laws of reality don't apply so I see no reason why you can't share an experience with another dreamer.
One reason its hard to prove shared dreams etc scientifically is that people who can do it tend to keep themselves to themselves.
