      Yes, I believe so. For example, if someone takes a shower in the middle of the night and you hear it, you may dream about water. Also different scents could affect what you dream about. So, yeah, outside sources can affect what you dream about.

      You just reminded me of my experience with that. I had a recurring nightmare when I was younger, which always started with hearing the monster coming upstairs. This was no doubt the sound of my parents going to bed.
