The Dream Machine

I am beginning to work on a project called the Dream Machine. The Dream Machine is a machine that will allow you to enter a dream-like state at will, let you work in your dream, and then save your progress that you have built. I plan to make this possible by using BTCs, or Brain Computer Interfaces. Mainly, it works by putting your conscious in a computer, and allowing your conscious to bring in memories of the senses so they do not need to be programmed. If you would like to try to make this possible, I could use all the help I could get. If you have no idea what I am talking out, think about Tron the movie.

If I can make it, why not? However, I just came up with the idea and I need to do a lot of research behind it first.

There is a limit where idea's are reachable and this one has passed it unfortunately.

That's what science is all about, what do you think that they're doing at CERN? they have over 10,000 unknown particles and they are looking for one in particular which has a specific function. Its not always about coming up with an idea and then making it, it could take years to research each and every ingredient before you know how to compose this cake. Even if it cannot be completed in one's lifetime working towards the goal will always bring new knowledge and inventions along the way. In the end, nothing is impossible, just who the hell do you think we are? CERN was set up to establish to establish and prove that certain theories and particles may exist. They have a relativily good idea of what particles exist and what will happen. On the other hand this guy wants to place youtr conscious in a computer. We have no idea what your conscious truly is, no idea how to link up a computer to your brain, no idea what every part of your brain does, no idea how exactly and where memories are stored. Sorry if i'm bursting your bubble but what we have accomplished at CERN is thanks to over two thousand years worth of knowledge on physics and mathematics to produce. Studies on the brain started only a few hundred years ago. In science you dont start at the extreme you study the basic first.

You start with a dream, then you chop that dream into little reachable pieces, you start working through those pieces, until you reach that seemingly impossible goal. You don't think the Wright brothers started by studying the wings of a bird and then thought "Hey, lets build an airplane" right? They studied the wings because they had the dream of human flight. Don't get me wrong, I agree with you on anything you said, and I know what you are trying to convince me of, that the OP's idea is a little too big and impossible, but we as an technology driven society need dreamers to place the bar high.

I believe that the capacity of the human brain is around 100,000,000,000(100 billion) terabytes(for anyone who needs a comparison that is 100 trillion gigabytes, or 100 quadrillion megabytes), or 1/4 the size of the entire internet. Even if you created the program, which believe is possible, with a few new technologies down the road, with current computer speeds, and I'm talking about the sexiest supercomputers there are, it would take approximately 7,000,000 years to upload or download all of the information needed. Bit of a longshot don't you think?

I believe that the capacity of the human brain is around 100,000,000,000(100 billion) terabytes That is if you would give each individual brain cell its own terabyte, then yes, but I don't see the point in that. It would be more likely to simulate each individual brain cell with 1 bit or a maybe a byte depending on the function(input/output) of that specific braincell. I'm not a brain researcher nor am I a biologist but I find it highly unlikely to think that 1 brain cell could contain a function that would be equal to 1 terabyte. So I would rather say that the brain would contain about 100 billion bytes (given that some cells would be bigger and others smaller in simulated cells). 100.000.000.000 bytes would be equal to 100GB, this seems more realistic to me, but this off course is only speculation on my part. Edit: Not to mention that the OP only wants to save the current state of the dream, which would only have to contain the currently involved brain cells.

Hmmm, that sounds about right indeed, but realistically speaking it would require the memory addresses of the 7000 other simulated cells which would be more like 7000 bytes if not more in total. I had no idea they could be connected up to 7000 other neurons, I thought maybe about 10 max But oh well the brain is a mystery, but the 100 billion terabytes just seems way off.

Ok. I believe I have found the best solution to our problem. Instead of uploading my brain into a virtual body, we simpily trick the brain into believing it is somewhere else. Example: Everyday, our neurons fire due to changes in light, sight, taste, etc... People have been able to specific parts of the brain that allow this to happen. So, all I need to do to make myself believe there is a tree in front of me, it to stimulate my neurons that fire when they see a tree using ultrasounds. So, using ultrasounds, you can trick the brain into seeing, hearing, tasting, feeling, and even smelling things by simply firing the neurons that would fire when one of those happens.

Thats impossible because no one interprets a tree tha same way, before you know its a tree your brain goes through you memory and then you recognize it.

This is an interesting idea. But I don't think we as humans are even capable of doing this yet. I mean...if you can do it go ahead. But I honestly think this is beyond human technological capabilities. I do know that we're supposed to have technologies like what you're talking about in 30 years or so though.
