I'm a sleep walker, so I know that my sleeping body is actually pretty clumsy. I have been foiled by a baby gate. That's how I knew when one lucid dream, when I thought I was lifting my physical hand up and waving it in front of my face, I couldn't possibly actually do that while I'm asleep without smacking myself in the head. Once I woke up, I wasn't even in a position where I could have done that anyway... the position I was sleeping in was actually completely different from the one I thought I was in when I thought I was going to wake myself up.
I've learned to check the location of the light on my ceiling when I think I'm opening my "real" eyes (and worried it'll end the dream). Is the light on? False awakening. Is the light in the wrong place? False awakening. Is the room actually nothing like my actual bedroom? You get the idea. And I still often mess up, and later realize - d'oh - it was a false awakening.
Even when it's not, and I wake myself up... there'll be other lucids. I'd rather just wake myself up trying to do what I want, rather than being afraid of doing anything. The more you practice, the less likely it is that you'll accidentally wake yourself up in the future, and the more likely it is that you'll learn to recognize false awakenings.
