I agree with smell being very strong memory refresher.
And yes, sometimes as soon as my head hits the pillow, I start to get flashbacks of dreams recent and even long forgotten ones. They come in such a rapid succession, that It's near impossible to stop and explore a dream in more detail. It's my favorite time of the day, when this happens. All I can manage to mutter to myself is "ooooh, that one, and uuuh, that one too, cool", as the images scroll through my minds eye.
But I found that more I recall that one snippet, more often it returns and sometime, rarely though, more details emerge.
So maybe if you write those fragments down and then try to recall them every evening, maybe some more details will reveal themselves. And if there is some false memories with it, well, I don't think that can be prevented either way. Good luck.
