You are doing it right, but you should pinch yourself even when everything seems completely normal, In a dream something weird may actually seem completely normal and you wouldn't think to do a reality check. Its also best to assume you're dreaming already, If your reality check fails it doesn't matter, just assure yourself it will work next time.

Maybe have more than 1 reality check, such as trying to levitate or looking at the time.
